Silver Trembling Hands
The Flaming Lips Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She keeps feeling for the blindfold
She keeps wishing for the secret society
To fall
She keeps watching for the jaguar
With the silver trembling hand
Dagger
Night
Fight
Tomorrow
She forgets about the fear

When she's high
When she's high
When she's high
When she's high

She puts diamonds on her forehead
They remind her how the animals and
Trees and insects call
Is it wrong not to believe
Nature makes us all compete
Daggers
Night fight
Tomorrow
She forgets about the fear

When she's high
When she's high

When she's high
When she's high

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Silver Trembling Hands" by The Flaming Lips depict a woman seeking something elusive, perhaps a sense of belonging and purpose. She yearns for a secret society that she wants to fall, while also watching out for the jaguar with the silver trembling hand. The jaguar, with a dagger and engaged in a night fight, possibly represents her fear and uncertainty about the future. However, when she is high, she forgets these fears, putting diamonds on her forehead as a reminder of the beauty and harmony found in nature.

The song's lyrics touch upon themes of yearning, fear, and the search for meaning in the world. The blindfold and secret society could symbolize the uncertainty and frustrations that come with not fully understanding the world and oneself. The jaguar represents the unknown that can be both daunting and alluring. However, through the use of diamonds on her forehead, the lyrics suggest that beauty and harmony can be found in nature, providing a momentary escape from the fears and questions that beset the singer.

This is probably one of the most innovative album's I've ever heard..growing up on the Beatles ,and Floyd

@corey-bird3489

My favorite band is They Might Be Giants but I HAVE to label them, Flaming Lips, Butthole Surfers and Red Aunts as the weirdest rock bands, at least likely inspired by Beatles/Floyd.

When ever I listen to almost any of there songs, I just think how does this song not have more views?

@KSabot

First Flaming Lips song I heard.

Actually, probably not the first, just the first time I listened and thought "who tf are these guys?", the rest was history.

@Maxxabstract

Definitely my first. And I’ve not yet got into anything else oh em. But this is great 👍

@corey-bird3489

@Maxxabstract My first was Bad Days thanks to Batman Forever. Their songs for Spongebob and Ender’s Game and Spider-Man 3 are nice in my opinion.

@Maxxabstract

@Corey Messick the lips wrote songs for those OST's? nice nice

@corey-bird3489

@Maxxabstract Yep! For some reason the Spongebob musical and the first and third film but not the second. They’re like Randy Newman to Pixar. I’m working on my story Glark’s Cable (spoonerism of Clark Gable) and when I upload it, I intend on using the song Riding To Work in the Year 2025 and giving credit.

@Maxxabstract Your profile pic actually looks like something psychedelic they’d use on an album cover or what.
