The Flaming Lips are known for their lush, multi-layered arrangements, spacey lyrics and bizarre song titles. They are also acclaimed for their elaborate live shows, which typically feature animal suits, puppets, streamers, video projections and complex stage light configurations.
In 2002, Q magazine named The Flaming Lips one of the "50 Bands to See Before You Die". In 2006, Oklahoma City named a street Flaming Lips Alley in their honor.
The group recorded several albums and EPs for Restless Records in the 1980s and early 1990s. After signing to Warner Brothers, they scored a #9 hit on the Billboard Alternative charts (and #55 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart) in 1994 with "She Don't Use Jelly". Although it would be their only hit single, the band has maintained critical respect and, to a lesser extent, commercial viability with sonically majestic albums such as 1995's Clouds Taste Metallic, 1999's The Soft Bulletin, 2002's Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots and 2006's At War with the Mystics. The Flaming Lips' 12th studio album, Embryonic, was released in October of 2009. A complete cover of Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon was released in May 2010. The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends, their collaborative album which features artists like Ke$ha, Bon Iver, Nick Cave and Erykah Badu, was released on Record Store Day, April 2012.
Their next studio album, tentatively titled The Terror, will be released in January 2013.
Their song "Do You Realize??" is the official State Rock Song of Oklahoma.

Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots Part 1
The Flaming Lips Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
She's a black belt in karate
Working for the city
She has to discipline her body
'Cause she knows that it's demanding
To defeat those evil machines
I know she can beat them
But you won't let those robots eat me
Yoshimi they don't believe me
But you won't let those robots defeat me
Those evil-natured robots
They're programmed to destroy us
She's gotta be strong to fight them
So she's taking lots of vitamins
'Cause she knows that it'd be tragic
If those evil robots win
I know she can beat them
Oh Yoshimi they don't believe me
But you won't let those robots defeat me
Yoshimi they don't believe me
But you won't let those robots eat me
Yoshimi
'Cause she knows that it'd be tragic
If those evil robots win
I know she can beat them
Oh Yoshimi they don't believe me
But you won't let those robots defeat me
Yoshimi they don't believe me
But you won't let those robots eat me
Yoshimi they don't believe me
But you won't let those robots defeat me
Yoshimi they don't believe me
But you won't let those robots eat
Yoshimi
The Flaming Lips’ “Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots Pt. 1” is an upbeat and catchy track that has a deeper meaning behind its lyrics. The singer of the song is Yoshimi, who is introduced as a black belt in karate, working for the city, and has to discipline her body. The reason for this is because she has to fight against “evil-natured robots,” which are programmed to destroy humanity. The lyrics suggest that she is taking lots of vitamins to stay strong, as it would be tragic if she were to lose and the robots were to win.
The song is a metaphor for the struggle against life’s obstacles and challenges. Yoshimi represents the strength and determination needed to overcome these obstacles, while the robots represent the hardships that stand in our way. The lyrics convey a message of hope, implying that with enough strength and resilience, one can triumph over even the most daunting of obstacles.
The song has various interpretations and can be seen as a commentary on technology and its potential to both help and harm humanity. It can also be interpreted as a tribute to Yoshimi P-We of the band The Boredoms, who was a friend of The Flaming Lips and an inspiration for their music.

This song helped. The cancer wasnt going to win. My babies were only 9 months old and 3 years old.
Those robots didn't defeat me.
