Late Night
The Foals Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh, I hope that you, somebody
Someone I could count
To pull me to my feet again
When I was in doubt

Oh now Mama, do you hear me?
I'm calling out your name
Oh now Mama, do you hear me?
I'm calling out your name
I'm calling out your name

I'm the last cowboy in this town
Empty veins and my plastic broken crown

They said I swam the sea that ran around
They said I once was lost but now I'm truly found

And I know the place another way
I feel, I feel no shame
Oh now Mama, do you hear my fear?
It's coming after me
I'm calling out your name
I'm calling out your name

Stay with me
Stay with me

Did you throw your heart away?
Oh I know just what I say
Did your phone cut in the way?
Being still downtown I say

And I know you ran away
Oh I know but I'm feeling okay
And I found love and fear wont go
And I found love and feeling wont go
See you walk away
Feeling okay now
Happy now?

Stay with me
Stay with me

Stay with me
Stay with me

Overall Meaning

The Foals’ song, Late Night, speaks on the vulnerability that one feels when they reach out for help. The lyrics suggest that the singer is in a situation where they require someone to help them get back on their feet when they face doubt. The opening verse features the singer calling for someone they can trust and count on to be in their corner. The reference to the singer calling out ‘Mama’ could be interpreted as the singer seeking the help and support of a maternal figure. Furthermore, the second verse mentions a ‘lost cowboy,’ which implies that the singer is lost and searching for a way back. The lyrics also suggest that the singer feels no shame in asking for help as they continue to call out for someone to stay with them.

The chorus repeats twice in the song and highlights the singer’s frantic plea for someone to stay with them. This plea could also be a way of preventing themselves from falling back into doubt and reaffirms the vulnerability in reaching out. The following verse sees the singer questioning if someone has thrown away their heart while expressing their understanding, suggesting that they may have equally gone through a similar situation. Towards the end of the song, the lyrics imply that the singer has found love and that they are feeling okay now but still require someone to stay with them.

Oh, I hoped that you were somebody
Someone I could count
To pull me to my feet again
When I was in doubt

Oh now Mama, do you hear me
Calling out your name?
Oh now Mama, do you hear me
Calling out your name?

Calling out your name?

Now I'm the last cowboy in this town
Empty veins and my plastic broken crown

They said I swam the sea then ran aground
They said I once was lost, but now I'm truly found

And I know the place but not the wave
I feel, I feel no shame
Oh now Mama, do you hear my fear?
It's coming after me!

Calling out your name!
Calling out your name!

Stay with me
Stay with me

Then you threw your heart away
Oh, I know just what to say
Through the phone cord; it can wait
We've still got time to say

And I know you ran away
Oh, I know but I'm feeling okay
But now I found love and the feeling won't go
Now I found love but the feeling won't go!
See you walk away!
Feeling okay, now!
Happy now?

Stay with me!

Stay with me!

Let phone cut in the way
Being still downtown I say

This is the most underrated song by Foals, for me it's one of the best or plain and simple, their best song ever made, it's just beautiful and maybe it deserves way much more love tough it's fine by me, very few people really appreciates this gem.

@TheBanditBren

I totally agree. I may also take it one step further and say this is the best song I have ever heard. It tickles my emotions in just the right way.

@josecastanedamusic

The hotel is named the “hotel of life”. From my interpretation, all of these events are happening in the hotel (as clearly seen). This video shows 3 things : love, life, and death. All three things everyone experiences in life, and the guy that was getting drunk was in the middle of it all. It just goes to show how much happens in the world and the nature we humans have. This video is pure art

@dimonvlasss

i think it shows how close LIFE, LOVE, DEATH to each other
