Lou Barlow formed The Folk Implosion with John Davis in the 1990s as a way to explore different kinds of music that his other band Sebadoh did not normally play. "The Lou Barlow Folk Implosion," as it is sometimes called, took its name as a tribute to the band The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. Another incarnation of this band went under the name Deluxx Folk Implosion, which featured Bob Fay, who worked with Lou Barlow in Sebadoh, on drums.
Folk Implosion briefly stepped to the forefront of the alternative rock scene with their song Natural One which was featured on the soundtrack to the movie Kids (Kids) and received strong airplay on alternative rock format radio stations.
Gravity
The Folk Implosion Lyrics

Creep with the summer on my skin
Strapped to machinery, theory and catastrophe
Open up and let it in
Radar, we are, could be willing
Spot my eyes and cross the line
Tell me I'm more than I'm feeling
There's more than gravity pushing on me
I know the heart's a muscle, too
See a pulse up close and quiver
Still holding back the rapture
There's more than gravity pushing on me
Gravity decides
Radar, we are, could be willing
Spot my eyes and cross the line
Tell me I'm more than I'm feeling
Say the mirror only lies
There's more than gravity pushing on me
I know the heart's a muscle, too
See a pulse up close and quiver
Still holding back the rapture
There's more than gravity pushing on me
Gravity decides
Mirrors only lie
Gravity decides
The lyrics to The Folk Implosion's track "Gravity" have a poignant introspective feel to them with the singer revealing an inner turmoil that they grapple with. The opening lines "I collide with the world again, creep with the summer on my skin" suggest a sense of disorientation that the individual is experiencing. The following lines "strapped to machinery, theory, and catastrophe" hints at the weighty and sometimes overwhelming pressures that the individual feels as they navigate the demands of the world they inhabit. The individual then calls out to "open up and let it in" which can be interpreted as an invitation to embrace and interact with the world instead of wrestling with it.
The chorus lines "there's more than gravity pushing on me, I know the heart's a muscle too" implies that the singer has come to the realization that the things that drive them are not only external factors like the laws of gravity but also the workings of their own heart. They acknowledge the power of their emotions, represented by the pulse that makes their heart beat, which is labeled as holding back the rapture. The final lines "gravity decides, mirrors only lie" reinforces the struggle of the singer to reconcile the external and internal forces that shape their reality. The singer is trying to find a balance between the two so they can overcome the pull of gravity and not be held back.
