Hank relocated to Los Angeles to fulfill a desire to "live in a culturally important city where I could be in warm weather and still go out and hear rock 'n' roll at night." Charlotte soon followed, with an eagerness to follow her brother into the music industry. With a number of song ideas under their belt, the Fontaines were soon born (the name was inspired by the character of Tripp Fontaine from Jeffrey Eugenides' book The Virgin Suicides alongside the character of Johnny Fontaine from The Godfather). Soon, after having re-formed a live ensemble, the Fontaines were performing anywhere they could, eventually generating an ever-burgeoning fan base as a result of the turnout at their gigs. Their debut release, a 2015 self-titled EP, dominated the higher end of specialty radio charts, with the group going on to perform at a number of international music festivals. In early 2016 the Fontaines released their second EP (aptly entitled ii), which featured a cover of Cold War Kids' hit "Hang Me Up to Dry." Like its predecessor, it garnered positive reviews for its eclectic mixture of doo wop-inspired vocals; bright, soulful melodies; and sleek, polished production. They followed up with the track "Evaporate" in early 2017. ~ Rob Wacey, Rovi

How long can we stay apart?
You may get it maybe never
But it's coming from the heart.
Your life is full of indecision
You can't make up your mind.
We must get it in position
And move it on down the line.
I been on that road too long of a time
Yes the road is long, and it winds and winds
When I think of the love that I left behind.
Make me up a bed of roses
And hang them down from the vine
Of all my loves you've been the closest
That's ever been on my mind.
Please don't talk about tomorrow
I'm really not one to care
This world is filled with too much sorrow
That nobody's heart should bear.
'Cause the road is long, it's a long hard climb
I been on that road too long of a time
Yes the road is long, and it winds and winds
When I think of the love that I left behind.
Please, please give me indication
Stop and talk to me
Like a river that is flowing
My love will never cease to be.
You will always be my honey
No one could take your part
Our love can't be bought with money
'Cause it's coming from the heart.
'Cause the road is long, it's a long hard climb
I been on that road too long of a time
Yes the road is long, and it winds and winds
When I think of the love that I left behind.
The Fontaines’s song 1984 is a soulful romantic song about rekindling a lost love. The song speaks of a desire to come together, to move past indecision and distance, and to rebuild a love that was once thought to be lost. The lyrics reflect the sentiment that true love is not something that can be easily bought or forgotten, but is a love that comes from the heart. The imagery of “a long hard climb” and “a road that winds and winds” is a powerful metaphor for the difficult journey of reconciling differences and rebuilding relationships. The singer of the song is optimistic and hopeful that love will prevail, and that they will find a way to move forward together, despite the obstacles in their path.
The chorus of the song serves as a reminder that the road to healing is not an easy one, but is a journey that is worth taking. The lyrics suggest that the singer has been on this road for a long time, but is determined to keep going, even when faced with difficulties. The verses are filled with tender lyrics that speak to the deepest emotions of the heart, and the chorus comes in with a strong, powerful message that reflects the resilience of the human spirit.
