Everlong
The Foo Fighters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hello
I've waited here for you
Everlong

Tonight I throw myself in two
Out of the red
Out of her head she sang
Come down and waste away with me
Down with me
Slow, how you wanted it to be
I'm over my head
Out of her head she sang

And I wonder
When I sing along with you
If everything could ever feel this real forever
If anything could ever be this good again
The only thing I'll ever ask of you
You've got to promise not to stop when I say when
She sang

Breathe out
So I can breathe you in
Hold you in
And now
I know you've always been
Out of your head
Out of my head I sang

And I wonder
When I sing along with you
If everything could ever feel this real forever
If anything could ever be this good again

The only thing I'll ever ask of you
You've got to promise not to stop when I say when
She sang

And I wonder
If everything could ever feel this real forever
If anything could ever be this good again
The only thing I'll ever ask of you
You've got to promise not to stop when I say when

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Foo Fighters' song "Everlong" are about being in love and wanting that feeling to last forever. The singer has been waiting for their lover and expresses that they are willing to throw themselves into the relationship, out of the red, and out of their heads to be together. The lines "Come down and waste away with me, down with me" expresses a desire to be close and intimate with their partner. The second verse switches perspectives, with the partner singing about being out of their own head. The rest of the song revolves around the idea that the singer never wants the feeling of being with their lover to end and, therefore, asks them to promise never to stop the relationship when the singer says when. The final lines repeat the idea that the singer wonders if anything could ever be this good again.

Dad died today.
1:20 am.
A five day battle with brain cancer.
I played this song for hours on a $49 dollar acoustic guitar beside his death bed.
He couldn't talk but I know he could hear.
It was the last song he ever heard,
and it was an honor to play it for you.
I'll miss you forever dad.

Edit: Your comments saved my life. Thank you.

Honestly i love this song. I remember my dad listening to this song while i was half asleep in the backseat. It's been a couple years but whenever he gets the chance he'll introduce songs like this to me. Me and him love listening to song like this. I don't listen to songs like this with my mother anymore but i still enjoy the times when we did..
I might not have the best relationship with my parents but i still love them no matter if everything has changed.

Edit:
This is still my favorite song, probably of all time.
I still dont have the greatest relationship with my parents but that's because they never really try to..
But at least those times with them will always be worth it.

Random facts about Everlong!

# The song was written at the low point of Grohl's career. He was recently divorced and two bandmates thinking about to leaving. (Drummer William Goldsmith and guitarist Pat Smear) Dave was in a sleeping bag on a friend's couch when he started writing it.
# In an interview, Grohl said the song is about "That song's about a girl that I'd fallen in love with and it was basically about being connected to someone so much, that not only do you love them physically and spiritually, but when you sing along with them you harmonise perfectly."
# The song is about about the start of his relationship with ex-wife, Jennifer Youngblood. The song Walking After You is to reflect his feelings after the divorce.
# Towards the end of the song, there is a instrumental drop and Grohl whispers as the song builds back up. The lyrics here have not been fully deciphered yet but its three different vocal tracks played simultaneously through the right, center and left speakers. One is love letter, the second is a studio technical manual and the last is a studio technician's story about his Dad forcing him hold boots.
# When Grohl first wrote the guitar rift, he thought it was a rip off Sonic Youth song.
# Everlong, (and the Foo Fighters) is David Letterman's favourite song. When he came back to the Late Night Show from heart surgery, Letterman requested the Foos to play Everlong at his opening. He also asked them to play for his retirement from the show. Dave was honoured.
# The concept for the video was to be a parody of Sam Rami's Evil Dead. Resembling a couple going to a cabin in the woods, being atracked at night and the hero loosing control of their hand.
# Director of the music video, Michel Gondry, has directed music videos for Björk, Daft Punk, Kanye West, Radiohead and many more. He then went on to direct films Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Be Kind Rewind and The Green Hornet.
# Grohl played an acoustic version of the song at a school for children with disabilities to get a standing ovation. He later commented that it was the closest he'd even been to crying on stage.
# In Friends, an orchestral version of Everlong was played after Chandler and Monica's wedding vows.
# The prelude and epilogue of the music video Learn to Fly is a goofy electronica version of Everlong. The scenes include Jack Black and Kyle Gass, which Grohl would later go to drum for in Tenacious D. The song was covered by The Moog Cookbook who previously covered Big Me for the music video Monkey Wrench.

When my brother died of leukemic cancer, he was wearing his headphones with his eyes closed and a smile on his face, this song was ringing on his phone. Whenever it sounds or I listen to it again, it reminds me of that scene and I wonder "If everything could ever be this real forever
If anything could ever be this good again". Miss you Chris You have no idea how much i miss you

Im so sorry for your loss man :(

@LaMuffalita582

I’m so very sorry. I lost one of my older sisters back in 2004, it almost broke my entire family. I promise you, regardless of beliefs;you will see him again and he is around you. How do I know this? As a former Catholic, then Agnostic followed by dying /coding about 3 times so far because of a seizure disorder (Hospital ER has brought me back) I’ve gotten my answer that THERE IS MORE THAN THIS WORLD. I was on life support after my last episode yet I’m not afraid of dying because I KNOW there is more. ✌️ ❤️
