The ending is insane to me, trapping mephisto and immediately taking a portal he conjured.

Seeing how many times our heroes were struck with momentary sheep IQ and immediately eat the consequences. I was sure he would would just rip her throat out and take the stone with him.

Then immediately leaving with it without telling anyone where you go in a world infested with cultists and demons!?

If the world was truly "dark and gritty" she would end up stabbed by a goatman in her sleep and the stone would be lost.

Even the overworld bugs me, there are villages in a death swamp with murder snakemen with no natural defences/walls with maybe 15-20 people in them.

If this world was truly dangerous why arent people doing the first thing they would do and build a damn wall and watchposts around their encampments?

I see these comments all too often. Yet the reality is to get this* kind of quality cinematic takes a lot of time and that's a lot of money paid to perhaps the top tier talent in that field.

To make an extra 1 and a half hour version of this would take so much more time and money --- that's a huge risk when there hasn't been a great track record for video game movies turning profitable.

Granted some of that is due to bad adaptations, but the WoW movie was the one attempt to see if there was an appetite, and I imagine it broke even.

Lilith made some good points but overall, choosing either Inarius or Lilith were the wrong solution. Both wanted to use humanity to further their own agendas and considered humanity a crude yet useful tool at worst or a pet at best. Do remember that when Lilith killed all the renegades but Inarius were partly due to her maternal love yeah, but also due to wanting to use the Nephalem as an army to beat both Heaven and Hell and being exterminated before performing that function was a big nono for her.

Both of them either lie or twist the truth when it favors them, just that Inarius doesnt bother too much to hide that hes an arse, specially after enjoying Mephisto's "atentions" for three thousand years

Elias is the best character conceptually, design-wise and story-wise. The opening cinematic featuring him was what "sold" us Diablo 4. He deserves much more than his untimely death. His skills/spells were so underwhelming, it was way too easy beating him. His immortality secret should NOT have been discovered in Diablo 4. He should have vanished in dusts upon losing that final fight only to re-appear in epilogue to scheme a new unholy cosmic / inter-dimensional war on resurrecting villains/antagonists from the previous Diablo universe. Blizzard could have done so much with his character. What a shame. What a loss.

I like how I'm watching some of these cutscenes thinking something is "off" and later realizing it's the actual gameplay graphics being used as cutscenes, often transitioning into boss fights or the next chapter of gameplay and such. Definitely comes off as more immersive but at the same time it's kind of a shame there's only two actual "cinematics" from the looks of it.

Yes a bit disappointed, Blizzard always had some of the best pre-rendered CG in their games. Even if you look at Diablo 1 + 2, that don't look that great anymore by todays standards, at the time they were really cool. Lilith is my personal fave Diablo villain. She has so much depth, her interaction with Inarius before his death, hoping the man she loved was still in there, was so interesting. Sadly the most well written villain was very wasted. We should have ended the game working with her. Teaming up with her to protect Sanctuary. Man, I just wanted to abandon my dumbfuck "allies" and join her, instead. So much potential for a fantastic and compelling narrative about how personal convictions matter, regardless of whether you're an angel or a demon, and have our Mother help save us. Diablo 2 happens: Tyrael discovers that Izual taught the prime evils how to corrupt soulstones and the worldstone, and that 'trapping' prime evils inside of soulstones is EXACTLY what they want to have happen.

Honestly, although a game meant for all audiences, not as grim dark as Diablo, I felt the same way with Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Both games have an end of the world theme, differing in intensity.

But where there is that theme, the world doesn’t seem aware of it. No one is taking it as seriously as they should. Makes you scratch your head. And realize the creators weren’t interested in the game. Just money.

Such repeats in the AAA gaming industry is why I usually/sadly end up here; just watching the footage/cinematic, not participating. It’s free. And I’m not supporting their 50-50 creating in the process.

Only praise I can give is the character of Lilith for being consistent with her story. Yeah, her methods are crude, sometimes downright evil but it's all to protect Sanctuary from the eternal conflict... And in the other corner you have Inarius who basically cheated on the heavens with a demon one time and got banished/ostracised for it and now he's desperate for their approval. Kinda meh how they both went out without much of a fight or big impact, but then again, so did the archangel in diablo 3 who fought femdiablo and got slapped. But yeah, totally agree with everyone in the comments... They are just re-doing D1 and D2 with the main baddie being Mephisto instead of Diablo. Lazy writing

the story and characters in this game are just perfectly executed. The way it makes Lilith and Inarius such interesting and powerful characters, but still manages to make you feel small in this diablo world as the prime evils are still out there reforming. And the angels in heaven are still recuperating. It does the perfect job at making the story your playing feel important, but also makes you feel like you're only a small part in this massive lore still yet to come. Blizzard at its best again tbh.

I played this game from teenage years and now I am 32, so my rating is 5/10. Cutscenes and cinematics are awesome. Character classes and personification nice. Graphics less abundant and more realistic. But REALLY the story and logics within the game plot destroy every lore and storylines that the players believed in and got from diablo 1 to 3. Blizzard took the path of Mephisto too I would say. Have you been chasing Mammon so badly that you allowed yourself to be blinded so much you cant see the destruction of the storyline witch is the prime aspect of every game not only diablo. Sad. :(

I really love the characters that they built, especially Lilith but Blizzard could havedone so much more with them. Let us actually play thorugh all of these events, let us fight Rathma and Inarius. You could do bossfights but finish with a cutcene where Inarius kills Rathma for example, then later you show how Lilith reacts. Give us an actual choice whether we even want to be helped by Mephisto. They even set it all up like there could be a choice to help Lilith.

It's all stuff that would not be something Diablo did in the past, but why not embrace it? The atmosphere, voiceacting and flawless execution of rendered and ingame cutscenes was so flawless, I wish the story could have kept up.

So Inarius (who they hyped up for months) gets wrecked in cutscene without even putting up a fight. Lilith (who they also hyped up for months) dies without even really accomplishing anything. Rathma (who is the first angel/demon hybrid) also just dies off screen with absolutely no real impact on anything and then the end of the game is some lady walking off with a soul stone of a prime evil and we all know how well THAT worked out the last time it happened and OMG big surprise Mephisto was just manipulating you all the entire time (exactly like diablo was in diablo 3).

I need a little help with the storyline:
1) Was Inarius captured by Mephisto before he and Lilith created Sanctuary, or after he had banished Lilith and left Sanctuary (because she had killed the other angels and demons they had fled to Sanctuary with)?
2) Isn't Rathma (one of the original Nephalem) still alive not long before Diablo 4 undermining lore? Apparently people like Donan knew about him and could inform Inarious of his prophecy, but Tyrial did not know about him in Diablo 4 when a Nephalem was sorely needed. - They could have fixed this by having his prophecy and death happen in the time of the Nephalem.

Also, I understand why siding with Lilith could have potential drawbacks, and why you would want humanity not subservient to anybody, but by all accounts throughout the lore she just wanted humans to be strong enough to survive/escape the eternal conflict. It seemed a mistake not to take her hand.

Inarius was taken by Mephisto at the conclusion of the Sin War. Inarius battled Uldyssian, who is the most powerful being in existence after Anu shed himself of Tathamet. The burning hells already knew of sanctuary, but only Tyrael of the Angiris Council knew about Sanctuary. The battle was that fierce and powerful between Uldyssian and Inarius, who were both being amplified by the worldstone, the burning hells, and the angiris council became aware of it and sent their entire host to sanctuary. Uldyssian defeated Inarius and, with his power alone, pushed back the entire host of hell and heaven single handedly but died in the process.

Mephisto approached the Angiris council and proposed that neither side interfere with sanctuary and let them decide themselves on their nature good and evil, etc. The Angiris council put it to vote to either destroy Sanctuary or do as Mephisto suggested and leave them to their own devices he also got Inarius as part of the bargain, and the Angiris Council vote came down to leaving sanctuary alone.

As for your second question, yes, Rathma has been around since the beginning of sancturies creation, but even if any Horadrim did know about him, they wouldn't be able to so easily locate him. Even if the prophecy was prophesied thousands of years ago and he was killed, it still likely would have come to fruition.

Don't believe the kindly Motherly act with Lilith either she tried the exact same thing with Uldyssian an turned on him when he wouldn't do what she wanted. She ultimately wants to use the Nephalam to stop the eternal conflict yes but with the lords of hell, the angiris council, and their respective hosts out the way she could rule over creation herself.

I've been playing Diablo since Windows 95 via CD, I've followed the story very closely since then, I haven't had the chance to read all the books, much less have a machine to play Diablo 4 unfortunately, but from what I've been able to follow in the cinematics, the Bllizard gave a more certain destination for the game, different from what was the 3rd, less colorful, less cute, Diablo 4 returned to the essences, much closer to the real terror that was the masterpiece: Diablo 1, the best of all. Yep, that's how this story ends. They are now going to spend a couple of years milking the mindless with the battlepasses (which will NOT progress the story but instead have their own self contained short stories) and grossly overpriced cosmetics before selling a full priced expansion.
