The group took off after being signed to Capitol Records in 1952 at the insistence of high profile fan, Stan Kenton. They remained popular throughout the 50s and early 60s, releasing a wide array of successful albums, movie and television appearances and performing countless sold-out concerts. The band eventually lost mainstream attention with the emergence of the British pop bands of the 1960s, even though they managed to stay together even after the retirement of final original member Bob Flanigan in 1992.
As of 2001, the Freshmen have been composed of Bob Ferreira, Brian Eichenberger, Curtis Calderon, and Vince Johnson. Although the new lineup of the Four Freshmen have continued the legendary vocal tradition of the original band and perform many of the same standards, the current sound has more of a lounge sound rather than focusing primarily upon harmonies. This modernized sound has proven quite successful, as the group won Down Beat magazine's reader's poll award for Vocal Group of the Year in 2000, proving the quartet's prominence in the jazz world today.
It's A Blue World
The Four Freshmen Lyrics

It's a blue world alone;
My days and nights, that once were filled with heaven,
With you away, how empty they have grown!
It's a blue world from now on,
It's a through world for me;
The sea, the sky,
We're all an indigo hue!
Without you it's a blue blue world.
The lyrics to The Four Freshmen's "It's A Blue World" evokes a feeling of deep sadness and loneliness after a loved one has left. The singer is surrounded by a world that was once full of heaven, but now that their loved one is gone, everything has turned blue. The blue color represents the emptiness and sorrow the singer is feeling. The lyric "we're all an indigo hue" emphasizes this feeling further by showcasing that not just the singer, but everything that was once bright and lively has now faded away.
The repetition of the phrase "It's a blue world" throughout the song highlights just how much the singer's world has changed. The phrase is not only a description of the world but also a metaphor for the feelings that the singer is experiencing. The world that once held so much joy and beauty has now become a bleak and desolate place. The singer is left alone with their heart, which is also described as being blue.
Overall, the lyrics to "It's A Blue World" portray the pain and despair that one feels after losing someone they love. The use of metaphors and vivid descriptions adds depth to the emotion of the song.
