The group took off after being signed to Capitol Records in 1952 at the insistence of high profile fan, Stan Kenton. They remained popular throughout the 50s and early 60s, releasing a wide array of successful albums, movie and television appearances and performing countless sold-out concerts. The band eventually lost mainstream attention with the emergence of the British pop bands of the 1960s, even though they managed to stay together even after the retirement of final original member Bob Flanigan in 1992.
As of 2001, the Freshmen have been composed of Bob Ferreira, Brian Eichenberger, Curtis Calderon, and Vince Johnson. Although the new lineup of the Four Freshmen have continued the legendary vocal tradition of the original band and perform many of the same standards, the current sound has more of a lounge sound rather than focusing primarily upon harmonies. This modernized sound has proven quite successful, as the group won Down Beat magazine's reader's poll award for Vocal Group of the Year in 2000, proving the quartet's prominence in the jazz world today.
Stella By Starlight
The Four Freshmen Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Through years of endless springs
The murmur of a brook at eventide
That ripples by a nook where two lovers hide
A great symphonic theme
That's Stella by starlight
And not a dream
My heart and I agree
A great symphonic theme
That's Stella by starlight
And not a dream
My heart and I agree
She's everything on earth to me
The Four Freshmen's song Stella by Starlight speaks of the depth and intensity of romantic love. Through poetic comparisons and figurative language, the song portrays the innermost feelings of the singer for his beloved. The first stanza speaks of the enchanting sounds of nature - the robin's song, the murmur of a brook, and the nook where two lovers hide. These are symbolic references to feelings of happiness, joy, and the privacy and passion of the lovers. The second stanza puts forth a musical metaphor - "a great symphonic theme." It describes the grandeur of the love the singer has for Stella, who is like a guiding star to him. This great symphonic theme refers to the depth, intensity and melodious nature of love. The reference to Stella indicates eternal and unfading love as stars are timeless.
The song speaks of love being a reality rather than a dream. The singer's heart affirms that Stella is everything to him on this earth. The song hints at the vulnerability that creeps into a person when they fall in love, and how they weave that love into every aspect of their life. The singer's use of fresh imagery and musical metaphors make the song not just a love song but an ode to love itself. It is a tale of the essence of love, how it is all-encompassing, all-surrounding, and how it sustains and strengthens one's life.
