My great uncle saved 19 injured people by pulling and carrying them to safety. He risked his life by repeatedly returning to help others. He received 3rd degree burns on his arms and hands but he continued to help others through excruciating pain. He’s a hero in our family. We have a small gathering to remember him each anniversary. I remember sitting in an armchair watching the BBC football results on Grandstand, with pictures of this on the screen - it was unbelievable. The moment when a man ran out of the stand clearly on fire was horrific. Huge respect for the police officers and others who risked their lives to pull people out, as visible in a number of photos here.

It wasn’t live, there was no live feed from this. It was being recorded by Yorkshire TV for highlights to be featured in The Big Match the following day, so when this happened they had to hurriedly arrange a man on a motorbike to collect the tape from Bradford and hurry it back to YTV’s studios in Leeds so it could be fed down the line to the BBC, ITN and LWT (who were making World of Sport).

@Sticky tape 'n' rust Yes I just looked into this - you are correct, it wasn't live but the tape was hurriedly put out so that World of Sport and Grandstand could show the images. When they put them on, the presenters didn't know what would be on the tape and that gave it a live feel I guess, as they and us as viewers, got to see what happened for the first time, together. I am in disbelief to this day that this was broadcast. I was 10. My grandparents were down looking after us cos mum and dad were away. All of a sudden, there was footage of this being broadcast into our homes on a Saturday afternoon. I remember the man ablaze from head to toe, walking - walking! - out of the stand... I remember the copper with his hair on fire trying to put it out. It seemed to go on forever. My Nan came in and stood there watching like it was nothing. I was horrified. It stayed with me for months after that. I couldn't get it out of my mind when I tried to go to sleep. When my parents came home, mum was angry with Nan she'd let me watch it, but didn't seem to understand just how deeply watching people burning alive had affected me. Years later, I brought this up in therapy. The counsellor told me I'd suffered vicarious trauma. I can't imagine how much worse it must've been for the people actually there. God rest their souls.

@Neil Attitudes to this sort of thing seemed to be different back then. Another example would be the death of the famous high wire walker, Karl Wallenda. Karl's career had been followed on Blue Peter, indeed they did a special feature on him when he walked across the Thames on a tightrope. The day he died, Blue Peter sadly announced his demise with no actual footage of course but half an hour later on the six o'clock news, there it was in all its glory - and all of us, kids n'all, could hear him scream as he fell. I've tried, but I still can't watch it, I'm still suffering from PTSD after being there, approaching 40 years later and at times I still struggle to watch the team I support, in person. However horrific it looks on a screen. I can assure you it was 100 times worse in reality. God bless the 56 people who didn't make it home. I was one of the luckier ones.

Don't do it alone. Help is available through your local NHS IAPT service. PTSD is a normal reaction to abnormal events. It is very treatable. All the best.

I'm a Leeds fan I have friends who are city fans and I was there that day. I've never seen anything so horrific in my life before or since. Every year that goes by it infuriates me this tragic event is not remembered. We all feel for all Liverpool fans who tragically lost their lives at Hillsborough and quite rightly remember that event. @SteamlocoScrapper Except even the police force in news reports on that day stated that there were no fans - drunk or ticketless - that got in, the police admitted that they opened the exit gate to alleviate crushing.

The lie afterwards was spun by the police to protect themselves from the findings of the Taylor Report.

@bluemachine85 3 reasons really. 1 It was a complete accident, there was no-one to go after. (It could have been prevented but it wasn't one person's fault) 2) Not long afterwards, Liverpool had the Heysel Stadium disaster which took away some attention 3) As Bradford are typically in the lower leagues of the football league it doesn't get the same attention when the anniversary rolls around like a prem club's anniversary does.

I don’t tend to watch commentaries or news pieces about the fire as it brings back some horrible memories. I was with my sister and father standing in the old ‘chicken run, in front of the main stands in our usual position between the two dugouts. It was supposed to be a great celebration and I remember the players coming round pre match in a lap of honour. It was seriously frightening when the flames started to take hold. You did touch on it but no one at the time understood the danger of what was happening. It was like the fire was happening elsewhere and people just watched. Not for long but enough to let it take hold before the panic ensued. We were lucky being at the front of the stand we were able to get over the wall and help the younger kids around. We just then ran to the centre of the pitch. Even there though it was too hot and you couldn’t, look at it for the heat. One thing you didn’t mention was the wind. It was a windy day and that made the fire spread even quicker. We didn’t find out till the next day how bad it had been. On the pitch we had no way of knowing what was going on at the back of the stand. The club still remembers the 56 with a ribbon on its kit and a service is held every year. RIP the 56.

Yes sadly it was known as ‘flash fire’ with the wind carrying the flames and the combustible materials with the timber struts canopy and bitumen roof felt and the accumulation of rubbish that had been there for decades.

Apparently the wind always blew one way at Valley Parade but on the day of the fire it blew the other way which caused the fire to take hold a lot quicker.

As a young boy, I watched this live on Grandstand (I think it was) and the sheer speed of this tragedy was overwhelming.
The thing that will stay with me forever is watching a policeman bringing a person out of the fire, and he didnt realise his own hair/head was on fire...

One thing I remember about the policeman with his head on fire, which shocked me at the time, was the the commentator giggled, and then said in a serious voice, "of course one shouldn't laugh"...I'm sure I didn't imagine that, do you remember if that really happened?

I remember it playing out on the evening news here in Australia. It was horrible to fix your eyes on an individual, trying to drag them to safety by sheer force of will and then to see them disappear behind the smoke and not re-appear. Love all the families of those who perished and to those who survived, with or without life-changing injuries.

I was there, I had a season ticket in that stand. Luckily for me I went to that match (the last of a winning season) with a group of friends and we were in the family stand directly opposite. Can't tell you how tragic this was it's too graphic, I had friends who had relatives that were trapped in the back of the stand and perished. We will always remember.................................

I saw the video footage a few years back and I will never be able to forget the image of that poor man on fire. He was completely engulfed but walked so calmly because of the shock. Multiple police officers and fellow supporters used their coats and hands to put the fire out but I belive he later died. RIP to all 56 victims

My father, husband and at the time my eight year old son was there. Following the fire, I went to a memorial mass at St Patrick's RC Church. All the team and manager etc was there. At a point in the mass a young girl screamed uncontrollably for her family who had perished in the fire. I've seen real time footage of the tragedy, it's scary how quick it went up in flames. There was similar incident in the 1960s at Nottingham forest but thankfully no one was hurt due to the quick thinking of a police officer.

The stand at Bradford took 4 minutes to become an inferno. That was the main reason why so many people died. As well as trying to get out the way they had come in, instead of getting onto the pitch. So sad. RIP to the 56.

There was a video of the original TV coverage on YouTube but it was taken down because it was felt to be too harrowing. However, it is an absolutely eye-opening example of just how fast a fire can spread when it takes hold, given combustible materials and a bit of wind. I always took fire safety seriously after seeing that. The Kings Cross fire a couple of years later gave a different illustration of how fast things can go wrong.

Your dad, he got home? The images are horrific. I think I'm guilty with many others - I had largely forgotten this fire. It hadn't lodged in my memory like Hillsborough or Heysel stadium - but both those matches I was watching on telly. I particularly remember Hillsborough. Everyone watching that day will remember, about 30 minutes in, the camera panned along the front of the terrace. There was a thick crowd, but something was wrong - it looked wrong - they weren't moving - I said to my missus 'they're Dead'. They never broadcast that 1 minute shot again

My Dad was born in Bradford and had he not emigrated to Canada as a 20 year old in 1956, he might have been there. He was always a huge "football" fan and was very loyal to the town of his birth.

A big reason so many died from what I have read was because the turnstiles behind the stand that is used to leave the ground was locked during the game. So people that ran towards the turnstiles behind the stand was stuck and had nowhere to go.

I remember as a kid, there seemed to be a period in the eighties when the news was constantly full of stadium disasters. Watching this, I understand why. I knew the stadiums were old but it sounds like they were completely neglected in terms of maintenance, upgrading and cleaning, and people paid with their lives.

Was 8.5 years old at that time, a real big Bradford Fan.
I remember crying for a whole day when I saw this on the BBC News, my mother could not stop me.
It was a really sad day, but at that time I did not realize how bad it had gotten.

@Seltaeb The tv commentary team, who had a clear view with cameras that could zoom in, as well as see above the heads of the crowd (something those singing couldn't do) although assumed everyone had got out. There was no way of knowing dozens of fans were trapped at the back of the stand because the exits were locked. If you really think fans would be singing and cheering if they thought fans were being burned to death, you are utterly insane.

We were driving home along Canal Road, parallel to the football ground. It was my little boy’s second birthday, all the traffic had stopped. You could see the thick black smoke rising into the air, but the stench was awful, even with the windows closed all you could smell was roast meat. My husband turned the radio onto a local station so we knew what was happening but we couldn’t move for ages. My little ones in the back didn’t know why I was crying. The next day I took all my tulips from our garden and laid them with the other bunches against the half blackened wall. 🌹

This reminds me of the Coconut Grove fire in Boston Massachusetts. It was before my time, but I remember being hospitalized as a 13 year old at the Cable Memorial Hospital in Ipswich, MA., and having one of my nurses describe how she was a student nurse on call at City Hospital (today called Boston University Medical Center) when, in her words, "They started bringing them in." This more than 20 years after it happened and his good woman was still visibly distressed at recounting it. Until the '60's the back row in movie theaters in Boston were reserved for Coconut Grove survivors and their loved ones who were understandably anxious about being far from an exit. Thank you for posting about the back row being reserved for survivors. I hadn't heard about it....my grandmother was a nurse recovering from childbirth in the Boston City Hospital maternity ward on that day. She offered her room & was ready to assist but was told there weren't that many survivors, so she sat in her room, watching them lay out body after body in the parking lot under white sheets...as they kept on coming, she said she was told it was the Grove, but thought they made a mistake as she couldn't believe there was a building in Boston large enough to have that many casualties.

One of my old bosses was a serving fireman when this happened. He quit after this job. It was too much to cope with. Set up his own business, which I worked for a few years. The company doesn't exist now, but this tragedy affected and still affects a lot of people.

Bradford City weren't really founded in 1903. They just changed their name (previously Manningham) and the code of football they played. Previously they had been a Rugby League club (then called Northern Union). They were actually formed in 1880, and moved to Valley Parade in 1886.

I had never heard of this disaster, but I can tell, just by your comment section, lots of people were affected by it. Not to mention those 56 people who died and the many others who were injured! I know some people are probably still affected to this day, or there are some whose lives were changed forever. RIP to the list and peace for the hearts of the survivors.

My cousin was at the game that day and got burnt on his back but thankfully got out of the stand...horrifying to watch the footage even now so my heart goes out to everyone that lost their lives that day (54 city fans and 2 Lincoln fans) along with the thousands that witnessed those horrific scenes that day...that will never leave them and to live each day with that in their thoughts is horrific in itself...my heart thoughts and prayers always go out to u all...As a Liverpool supporter with big family connections to Bradford I always see city as my second team and always follow results etc etc so they will always have a place in my heart...I agree that this tragedy should recieve more than it does as like the Hillsborough disaster does but as long as tragedies like this never happen again then at least lessons have been learnt...much love to all City and Lincoln Fans especially the fallen 56...YNWA ❤⚽️

The collapsed floodlight pylon at 2:05 was caused by a storm a couple of years before the fire. Ominous to think that was next to where the fire started.

I was at a match in Birmingham that day. We were playing Leeds, another celebration game after winning promotion the week before. The Leeds fans had other ideas and the match tuned into one of the worst riots in football history. The match finished very late, amid rumours that someone had been killed in the ground, which was almost true, as a kid had died when a wall collapsed onto him as he was just outside the ground. We were all exhausted and emotional as we left the ground, only to get in the car to hear reports of the Bradford fire and a huge death toll. Then within a couple of weeks there was the Heysel disaster. May 85 was not a good month for football.

@haz haribo I was on the Kop corner, right by the Leeds fans. Blues went 1-0 up a few minutes before half time and that was the cue for the Leeds fans to kick off. The Blues fans were very quick to join in, but no way did they start it. At the time we thought that Leeds kicked off because they still had an outside chance of promotion that day, which was disappearing fast when blues scored. On a you tube video with footage of that day another commenter says the trouble started when Leeds fans climbed on top of a refreshment hut, and when they made a safety announcement asking them to get off it, even more climbed up, which brought in the police, which led to fighting, which led etc etc etc.

My ex’s brother was in the stand opposite on the day.

In a world without mobile phones and with news reports all over the tv, no-one knew if he was alive or dead for several hours…. Eventually he arrived home fortunately physically unharmed but covered in soot. He walked in and just sat silently on the sofa, unable and unwilling to speak for hours.

I was nine years old when the fire happened, I also sat on Bolton Road on my bike with my seven year old brother on his watching the fire engulf the stand, we could hear the screams and the shouting from the ground from where we were.. Some of it was haunting.
I'll never forget what we saw and I bought The Crowd "You'll never walk alone" record when it came out with my pocket money. I still have it too.

I was at the front of the stand that was destroyed several months earlier, following Hull City. I had been chatting with Bradford fans and enjoying their company. While awaiting the start of the game, I mentioned to an elderly Bradford fan that going through two turnstiles that were not aligned was rather an unusual way of entering a ground. I had never come across such a configuration before and said that it would significantly delay supporters if they had to exit the ground in a hurry! Seeing the live television pictures sent a shiver down my spine. If in Bradford for a chess match at the nearby Latvian Club, I try to spend a few minutes near the ground to pay my respects to those who died or were seriously injured.

I heard that too, from a fire prevention company. No mobile phones then, of course. Apparently the fire service was only alerted when an off-duty officer rang his station and told them they'd need back up. The reply? "What for?". They didn't know.

Not true, the game wasn’t being shown on live TV as there was no live link-up from the match to Yorkshire TV. It was being recorded in the outside broadcast vans at the stand ready to be taken back to Yorkshire TV in Leeds to edit highlights for The Big Match the following day. It wasn’t chosen for live coverage on World of Sport or Grandstand and as the ground had no facilities for BT to pipe live footage back to Yorkshire TV, the only option for a live match link would have been a van with microwave feed antenna to feed to YTV, but one wasn’t booked as it wasn’t necessary.

Someone working for YTV at the match phoned YTV for them to send a man on a motorbike to come and collect the tapes with this from them at Bradford stadium and to rush them back to YTV’s studios in Leeds so they could be fed down the line to the BBC, ITN, foreign broadcasters and LWT (who made World of Sport, which was on air as this match was being played).

The real story is that the policemen around block G in the stand radioed the match commander that they would need fire extinguishers but the flaky radio reception meant they were misheard and the fire brigade were called.

The fire was on our news programs way down in New Zealand for about a week. What a God awful sight to see even on the telly. Our sports grounds were very similar, very old wooden stands, now all demolished. One of the tv events I will never forget, even aged 61 I can still vividly picture that sad scene. Very sad.

I am from Canada. I am a descendant of British, Irish and Scottish and still have family there. Here soccer ( your football ) is not as popular as it is there. I am angry, and upset about this. Sadly there was a time when a lot of the basic rules that we have now about fire safety either didn’t exist as we know them now, or they were only very loosely followed with actual real enforcement of consequences for breaking those rules being weak or inconsistent.

I used to deal with John Helm’s son at my old work. He told me it still haunts his dad to this day. I imagine a lot of the survivors had to deal with PTSD for years afterwards.

I remember the event vividly, even to this day even though I wasn't there. I just came through the front door to watch the football scores come in, but to see my mum crying and saying "Oh my God, this is just terrible" and then watching the live scenes of the inferno and people on fire coming out of the stadium and collapsing on the pitch. First tragedy I ever saw unfold. Thank God they hadn't put cages around the pitchside at that point.

My Dad was at St Andrews the very same day, where a riot between Birmingham and Leeds fans claimed the life of a Leeds fan. He remembers running backwards and forwards between his seat so he could watch the fighting on the pitch, and to the bar where he could watch was was happening in Bradford on the TV. A terrible day for Yorkshire football clubs.

@Dalena Mullins Probably because cleaning takes effort and time. It's like the Hoeganaes dust fires, where management didn't think paying people to clean up was worth the cost. (The USCSB has a rather high-quality animation detailing the Hoeganaes dust fires on their YouTube channel. It's called 'Iron in the Fire'.) Put simply, the phrase 'regulations are written in blood' is not an understatement.

I'd just finished playing in a school football tournament and came home to my dad saying "Have you seen what is happening on the TV?" I was 12 at the time and it shocked me to the core and will always hear the commentator saying "Oh dear, there is a policeman and his hair is on fire" or words similar to that. In the early 1970s we had a fire alarm at the primary school I was attending. The stand of a local football stadium in a suburb of Frankfurt has caught fire. The stand was completely mad of wood. I still remember a piece of molten burning tar dropped just beside me even though I was 100 meters away. When the fire brigade arrived the whole stand was on fire, giving a similar sight as in the video above. No one was injured as there was no game played this morning. One could have learned from this incident already.

This is what happens when sports clubs such as this failed to invest. Piles of rubbish had over many years had accumulated under the old wooden stands and smoking was still along way off from being banned in all public places like it is today. The result was this horrific fire. There was another disaster similar to this in central London many years ago at a underground/tube station called King's Cross. It claimed the lives of many people. Because of years of neglect and poor maintenance. The fire started under the escalators again this was due to years of grease dirt and debris build up beneath the stairs and poor maintenance was also another factor Once again a discarded match was the cause of the fire ,dropped on the escalator and if found it's way onto lots of combustible material.
There was a huge flash fire engulfing everything in it's path .

Ive just seen the memorial wall on this video, its sadder than I thought, 4 members of One family died, three people from 2 families and some where 2 died from a family, the 1980s was the decade of disasters in British Football, Bradford Hillsborough, plus the Hysel Disaster.

If you didn’t know, this was partly shown 'live' on t. v. The seriousness of the incident was not realised by the producers at the BBC until a policeman was seen trying to put out his hair that had caught fire. I remember watching it 'till that point so I presume they cut the feed then.

I remember watching World of Sport when they cut to this, I was 10 years old and it still haunts me. One thing I recall being shocked by was the shot of a policeman with his head on fire, and the commentator giggled and then said in a serious voice "one really shouldn't laugh"...does anyone else remember that, and who said it? I'm sure I didn't imagine it, but it just seems like such a callous thing to have said during such a horrific tragedy.

@Mike Gaddass I remember seeing this on the Tv news, it was horrific. When I joined British Rail in 1990, we had our own Fire safety officers, who were all ex Fire Brigade staff. We were shown a film on a training course and the guy said, if anyone wants to leave the room, that`s fine because this is the unedited version and it was truly horrific. Lets forget about how much a Football club is worth, in terms of pure wealth, or media wealth. To the family`s and friends of the people who died or were forever scared, either physically or mentally at Ibrox, Bradford or Liverpool, no amount of Money will compensate them enough. Personally, I am not a Football fan, but I am Born and Bred in Liverpool. Please don`t let Money become an issue in these matters.

This almost immediately came to my mind. In both cases a certain amount of prevention could have happened- in the case of King’s Cross, the enforcement of a smoking van which was supposed to have been in place could have done much, along with proper maintenance of the escalator, whilst this stadium had, prior to the fire, several reports detailing the poor condition of the stand and the potential for the accumulated debris to be a fire hazard, with recommendations to clear it.

Absolutely unbelievable, I remember the footage on the T.V at the time with the match commentator continuing to react to the fire and even reacting to the man who slowly walked onto the pitch while on fire. There was a very detailed documentary on YouTube, I think it was a Dutch production and I don't know if it's still there. There is controversy regarding the cause of the fire, the detective inspector who claims an Australian tourist confessed to him he accidentally started the fire had a history of corruption and suspicion also fell on the clubs chairman who was accused of being responsible for suspicious fires at previous businesses.

A friend & I decided not to go to this match and spent our money in the 'Percy' pub instead. On the way out of town, towards Eccleshill we viewed the stadium on fire and were shocked. The accounts from friends and family were harrowing.
RIP to those who suffered a horrific end.
