Marie
The Four Tunes Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Marie, Marie, Marie
Marie, the dawn is breaking
Marie, (ooh, Marie) you'll soon be waking
To find you heart is aching
And tears (and tears) will fall (will fall) as you recall
The moon in all its splendor
A kiss (ooh, a kiss) so very tender
The words, "Will you surrender
To me, (Marie), Marie, (Marie-ee)?"

Marie, you'll soon be waking
To find you heart is aching
And tears (and tears) will fall (will fall) as you recall
The moon in all its splendor
A kiss (ooh, a kiss) so very tender

The words, "Will you surrender
To me, (Marie), Marie, (Marie) Marie (Marie-ee-ee)?"

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Four Tune's song "Marie" depict the feeling of heartbreak and nostalgia as the singer looks back on a past romance with Marie. The use of repetition in the song's lyrics, specifically the frequent mentions of Marie's name, serves to emphasize the singer's overwhelming emotions. The line "Marie, the dawn is breaking" illustrates the idea that a new day is beginning, but the singer still feels the pain of the past. The use of imagery such as "the moon in all its splendor" and "a kiss so very tender" adds to the nostalgic tone of the song.

The lyrics also convey a sense of longing in the singer's desire for Marie. The line "the words, 'will you surrender to me?'" suggests a plea for Marie to come back to the singer and rekindle their relationship. However, the repetition of the phrase "you'll soon be waking" implies that this may only be a dream in the singer's head.

Overall, the lyrics to "Marie" by The Four Tunes offer a poignant portrayal of the profound emotions that come with heartbreak and longing for a past love.

This song was played over the loudspeaker in the cafeteria at El Monte Union High School back in 1953. I loved it! It's so great that I have found it here.

My very favorite song from my junior high days. Never get tired of listening to it.

I grew up knowing a Marie, the daughter of my mother's best friend. But the beautiful song had nothing to do with the ugly health problems of the Marie I knew. I love the song, but it sure reminds me of her, may she rest in peace.
