When Your Mind's Made Up
The Frames Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

So, if you ever want something
And you call, call
Then'll come running
To fight, and I'll be at your door
When there's something worth running for

When your mind's made up
When your mind's made up
There's no point trying to change it
When your mind's made up
When your mind's made up
There's no point trying to stop it

You see, you're just like everyone
When the shit falls all you want to do is run, away
And hide all by yourself
When you're far from me, there's nothing else

When your mind's made up
When your mind's made up
There's no point trying to change it
When your mind's made up
When your mind's made up
There's no point even talking
When your mind's made up
When your mind's made up
There's no point trying to fight it

So, if you ever want something

And you call, call
Then I'll come running

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Frames’ song “When Your Mind’s Made Up” discuss the power of determination and the limitations it inevitably places on others’ attempts to sway an individual’s convictions. The opening lines convey a sense of loyalty and devotion, suggesting that the singer will support whoever seeks his help. He promises to “come running” if the requester needs someone to fight alongside them.

The chorus emphasizes that once a person has made up their mind, it is impossible to change it. They are steadfast in their opinion, and nothing outside of themselves can alter that fundamental truth. The second verse highlights the singer’s understanding of human nature. He recognizes that people tend to run away from their problems when things become difficult, but when there is real value to the cause, they will persist in their endeavors. The singer again pledges his devotion, describing how his absence leaves nothing for the requester to hold onto.

The song’s narrative is an encouragement to persevere through challenging circumstances and to believe in oneself even when those around them struggle to offer support. It speaks to the importance of holding onto one’s convictions, even when others may not approve, and the value of unwavering loyalty when it comes to friendships. Ultimately, the lyrics of “When Your Mind’s Made Up” remind us of the power of determination and perseverance in the face of adversity.

This song is, in my opinion, his greatest song he ever made so far. I do have to qualify this by adding that Say It To me Now competes with this. This is my favorite version because of the electric. All of Glens songs score a 15/10 on my scale, but this is a solid 15.5/10

There's an interesting trend of development in his music. In his early stuff, especially before Once was released, there is a very abstract, unclear quality to his lyrics and his instrumentals. After that, he seems to be moving toward a more refined, more developed style of writing. His songs on Didn't He Ramble were so perfectly tied up. They were clean and neatly polished. Didn't he Ramble just felt so...complete. he really did his homework on that record in a way he never has before. And this isn't to say his early songs were bad. The opposite is true.

I agree, its a fantastic song. I first heard it watching "Once" and I still think its one of the best he ever did.

They still play it. At the last gig at The Avalon they focused more on songs from their For The Birds album.
