The Next Time We Wed
The Fratellis Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Red eyes, tell me twice
Should I put my hopes on ice
Fair skin, empty face
Help me keep my nerve in place
Read my lips, time slips
Slowly from your fingertips
Make my night, hold tight
Thrill me 'til my teeth go white
Be my myth, I'll be your sin
Save me at your own expense

Uh huh

Well it's just like a girl I can keep a boy guessing
I'll wring you by the neck and I'll teach you such a lesson
I'll bleed from my profession
Here is my confession
Give me half a chance and you can be my new obsession
I'll take your only sympathy
Put me out my misery
Blow me one more kiss and, baby, you can have the best of me

Next time we wed
I'll be on my best behaviour
Next time we wed
I'll be everybody's saviour
Next time we wed
Darling, I'll be a saint
I'll be wrong when you're right
Keep my mouth shut and lips tight
Beg from my toes to my head
The next time we wed

Tell me this for nothing
Make me dignified
Kiss me as you're leaving
Just so you can say you tried
Make me sentimental
Beat me black and blue
Hit me up it's just so simple
Darling, I'm too good for you

Well it's just like a girl I can keep a boy guessing
I'll wring you by the neck and I'll teach you such a lesson
I'll bleed from my profession
Here is my confession
Give me half a chance and you can be my new obsession
I'll take your only sympathy
Put me out my misery
Blow me one more kiss and, baby, you can have the best of me

Next time we wed
I'll be on my best behaviour
Next time we wed
I'll be everybody's saviour
Next time we wed
I'll be handsome in the daylight
Next time we wed
Oh honey, I will lose my stage fright
Next time we wed
I won't specialize in failure
Next time we wed
I'll be everybody's saviour
Next time we wed
Honey, I'll be a saint

I'll be wrong when you're right
Keep my mouth shut and lips tight
Beg from my toes to my head
The next time we wed
The next time we wed

Overall Meaning

In "The Next Time We Wed" by The Fratellis, the lyrics evoke themes of longing, desire, and a complicated dynamic between the singer and their romantic interest. The song begins with imagery of red eyes, suggesting exhaustion and weariness. The singer questions whether they should hold onto hope or suppress their emotions ("Should I put my hopes on ice"). The mention of "fair skin, empty face" indicates a lack of emotional connection or depth in the relationship. The phrase "Help me keep my nerve in place" implies that the singer seeks reassurance and stability in their interactions.

As the song progresses, the lyrics delve into the power dynamics within the relationship. The line "Read my lips, time slips slowly from your fingertips" suggests that the romantic interest may be manipulative or play games with the singer's emotions. The singer asks to be thrilled until their teeth turn white, indicating a desire for intensity and excitement in their relationship. The plea to "be my myth, I'll be your sin" illustrates a willingness to be idealized or idolized by their partner, even at a personal cost.

The next verse shifts the focus to the singer's role in the relationship. They describe themselves as unpredictable and capable of keeping their romantic interest guessing. The line "I'll wring you by the neck and I'll teach you such a lesson" suggests a potential intensity and possessiveness in the singer's behavior. They playfully mention bleeding from their profession, possibly alluding to the emotional toll of their career or lifestyle. The singer's confession implies a desire for obsession and a willingness to give their partner a chance to be their new fascination.

The chorus of the song expresses a longing for a future wedding, promising to be on their best behavior and be everybody's savior. The singer desires to become a better version of themselves, willing to be wrong and keep their mouth shut to maintain harmony in the relationship. The repeated lines "Next time we wed" emphasize the hope for a more successful and fulfilling union in the future.

The final verse of the song discusses the singer's desire for validation and the complexity of their emotions. They ask to be made dignified and kissed as they leave, allowing their romantic interest to claim they tried. The singer mentions being sentimental, beaten, and hit, possibly alluding to a love-hate dynamic they find exhilarating. The closing lines "Darling, I'm too good for you" imply a sense of arrogance, suggesting that the singer believes they deserve better treatment than what they currently receive.

In conclusion, "The Next Time We Wed" by The Fratellis delves into the complexities of a relationship where desires, power dynamics, and emotional intricacies play a significant role. The lyrics depict a yearning for intensity, validation, and a hope for a future where the dynamics between the singer and their romantic interest can be more balanced and fulfilling.

A little over a decade of music and these guys have never disappointed me. Thank fuck for the fratellis!

Caitlin

I love this! Sure, it's different, but classic Fratellis can still be heard under the groove and I am so excited and itching for more!!

Holy Shit!!  The 2 things I have always said about the Fratelli's...1. Jon has some of the BEST writing of the 2000s.  2. Each album sounds COMPLETELY different! They are constantly evolving!!   I listen to this song and hear PRINCE influences!!Love it!

StevenPar77

Very unexpected. Really catchy. Fratellis don't really do anything wrong.

De los mejores años musicales, actuales. Que alegría que The Fratellis se una con nuevas creaciones.

VinceTheLovableStoner

What a tune! Out of the world, can't wait for the new record. You never disappointed me guys, never !

Apparently there's meant to be some drama about the newer disco-y stuff not being Costello music, but as an old fan of like three of your Costello songs who just last year found out they were all by the same guys, I'm bloody loving the new stuff too. In the span of six months you've gone from "Whoah, the Chelsea Dagger lads also wrote The Sad Whistling Glasgow Song?" to "why are these emotions happening what is this" all the way to "HELP ME I'M STUCK IN 24/7 FRATELLI"... "NO WAIT DON'T ACTUALLY HELP I LIKE PAIN".

On the off chance you read these, please know that really what we love is when you write what you want to write. <3 Your music is some of my absolute favourite music and, whether it's Costello Music or In Your Own Sweet time or even Bright Night Flowers (sorry Barry), I can always hear that beat-up-n-badass, sad-but-triumphant Fratelli vibe that I adore.

A.C. Harrison Isn't it "should I put my hopes on ice?" I guess this part is wrong, but I'm not 100% sure
