Future
The Futures Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

No longer can I remain earthbound
The future is now
Time and space are one in the same

Enough time and space and we running the game
Almost is unacceptable
The cosmos is a receptacle
For the spectacle of my ascension

Inhabiting multiple dimensions of perspective
All my actions selective
At all costs, I must obtain the objective
Regain the inception intended at the conception

A living lethal weapon
I'm the natural selection
Moving in my own eccentric orbit
A rebel amongst conformists

So far gone, you might catch me on Pluto
Four billion miles away
Do a whole week in one day
Live for keeping it real

You already know what it is
I rather ever speak without something to say

But if you can't remember the who, what, when, or the how
Remember one thing I said, the future is now

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of the song Future by The Futures's establishes his street cred - he has been in and out of prison (“wound stripes”) for thirty years and by now should be at the top of the American drug trade hierarchy, like the infamous drug lord Big Meech, who was sentenced to life in prison on drugs charges. Future tells us that he started off being a “connector” and then “washed his hands” which could mean that he was setting up deals with suppliers, and then got out of the game. He is warning people not to get involved in the drug game unless they’re sure they’re going to make serious money (“if it ain't them bands”). He prays for more success and riches while referencing the religious figure Messiah. The lyrics are symbolic of this striving for success and wealth by any means necessary.

The song contains themes of money, power, and hustling. Future appears to be glorifying the drug game and the lifestyle that comes with it. He name drops well-known drug kingpins like Big Meech and Pablo Escobar. Future’s lyrics also allude to the prevalence of lean drug use and the trappings of success that follow. He speaks of “drinkin’ bottles and they gold-rose” and “more paper than Kinkos”. Even though his lyrics do not indicate it, Future has spoken in various interviews about the negative consequences of drug use and promiscuity, which contradict the content of this song.

* The song Future was released in 2011 on the mixtape “Streetz Calling”.
* Future was inspired to write the song after listening to songs by southern rappers like Gucci Mane, T.I., and Jeezy.
* The song samples a song by Gypsy Woman titled “It's a New Day”.
* The term “wind stripes” refers to the badges worn by military personnel who have served in a combat zone.
* At the time of the song’s release, Future was relatively unknown in the music industry.
* The song was written and produced by Future himself under his pseudonym “Meathead”.
* In 2020, the song was featured in a commercial for the new season of the HBO show “Insecure”.
* The song was included on Complex’s list of the 50 greatest Atlanta rap songs of all time.
* “Future” is one of the rapper’s most popular songs, with over 50 million views on YouTube.
* In 2013, Future released the song “Karate Chop” with a controversial feature by Lil Wayne, which includes a lyric about the murder of Emmett Till. The lyric was later removed but created a media storm and triggered a lot of backlash against Future.
