The Last Border
The Gang Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hey cosa sta accadendo?
I killer tornano stanchi a casa
E le ombre corrono lungo la strada
Piombo al mercato nero
C'è chi ne fa gran scorta
Il livello di guardia sta salendo
E i guardiani sono nervosi
"oggi il giorno
È entrato di corsa
Rompendo il silenzio
Con un grido"
Nessuno dorme
Senza una pistola sotto il cuscino
Preferisci una poesia scritta all'inferno
O al freddo di Siberia
Vento di tempesta oltre l'ultima frontiera
Barricate a Praga '968
Torce umane riscaldano la primavera
Ed ora l'asfalto è più rosso
Nelle strade di Varsavia
Il prezzo del denaro diventa coscienza
Mentre i proiettili fanno il loro lavoro
Era freddo
Sul marciapiede del futuro
Quando i due guardarono l'orologio
Ma il tempo stava ormai per scadere

Stelle rosse di vergogna
Sul mirino dei ribelli afgani

Overall Meaning

The Gang's song "The Last Border" revolves around the chaos and fear that surrounds a society on the brink of collapse. The opening lyrics ("Hey cosa sta accadendo?") ask what is happening, as killers return home tired, shadows run along the street, and lead is being sold on the black market. People are stockpiling it, as the level of guard is rising, and the guards themselves are becoming nervous. The chorus ("Nessuno dorme senza una pistola sotto il cuscino") translates to "No one sleeps without a gun under the pillow," indicating the constant fear and paranoia that prevails in a dangerous society.

The song then turns its focus to historical events that illustrate the theme of rebellion against oppressive regimes. The barricades in Prague in 1968 and the torches of human warmth that warmed the spring are described alongside the streets of Warsaw being soaked in blood, with the price of money becoming one's conscience. The lyrics speak to the idea that political oppression, when it reaches a fever pitch, creates tension and unrest that leads to violent clashes. The last line about the red stars of shame on the sight of Afghan rebels implies that while the oppressed may be outmatched and outgunned, their spirit and courage cannot be extinguished.
