Frosty the Snowman
The Glenn Miller Orchestra/In The Christmas Mood vol.1 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

rudolph the red nosed reindeer
had a very shiny nose
and if you ever saw it
you would even say it glows
all of the other reindeer
used to laugh and call him names
they never let poor rudolph
join in any reindeer games
then one foggy christmas eve
santa came to say
rudolph with your nose so bright
won't you guide my sleigh tonight

then how the reindeer loved him
as they shouted out with glee
rudolph the red nosed reindeer
you'll go down in history

then one foggy christmas eve
santa came to say
rudolph with your nose so bright
won't you guide my sleigh tonight

then how the reindeer loved him
as they shouted out with glee
rudolph the red nosed reindeer
you'll go down in history

frosty the snowman was a jolly happy soul
with a corncob pipe and a button nose
and two eyes made out of coal
frosty the snowman is a fairy tale they say
he was made of snow but the children know
how he came to life one day

there must have been some magic in
that old silk hat they found
for when they placed it on his head
he began to dance around
frosty the snowman
was alive as he could be
and the children say he could laugh and play
just the same as you and me

frosty the snowman knew the sun was hot that day
so he said let's run and we'll have some fun
now before i melt away

down to the village with a broomstick in his hand
running here and there all around the square
saying catch me if you can

he led them down the streets of town
right to the traffic cop
and they only paused a moment when
they heard him holler "stop!"

frosty the snowman had to hurry on his way
but he waved good-bye saying don't you cry
i'll be back again someday

thumpety thump thump, thumpety thump thump,
look at frosty go

thumpety thump thump, thumpety thump thump,
over the hills of snow

Overall Meaning

The song Frosty the Snowman is a popular Christmas tune that tells the story of a snowman who comes to life and has an adventure with some children. The first verse describes Frosty as a jolly, happy soul with a corncob pipe and a button nose. This sets up Frosty's character as friendly and fun-loving, and it establishes his physical appearance. The second verse explains that Frosty is a fairy tale character made of snow, but the children know that he came to life thanks to the magic of an old silk hat they found. This introduces the magical element of the story and sets up Frosty's origin. The third verse describes Frosty's adventure as he leads the children through the village with a broomstick in his hand, running here and there, saying "catch me if you can." This verse shows that Frosty is mischievous and playful.

The chorus is repeated twice in the song, emphasizing the idea that Frosty is a beloved character who inspires joy and happiness. The final verse describes how Frosty has to hurry on his way and says that he'll be back again someday. This verse shows that while Frosty may be temporary, his spirit lives on and brings joy to those who remember him.

This actually is a studio recording we did in 1988 with former musicians of different iterations of the Glenn Miller ghost bands. I was one of the producers & arrangers and still enjoy listening to it. Most of this was done in two or three takes. It's been used in a few major Christmas films and it actually went Platinum or Double Platinum.

Great to hear from you -- I will tell my Jazz Ensemble that you posted on this song. We are playing your arrangement at Bellevue Square on December 12th @ the 12:30 slot. My students who were required to listen to it were very impressed as am I. Great producing!!! I think you are from the PNW, am I correct?
