A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square
The Glenn Miller Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

That certain night, the night we met
There was magic abroad in the air
There were angels dining at the Ritz
And a nightingale sang in Berkeley Square

I may be right, I may be wrong
But I'm perfectly willing to swear
That when you turned and smiled at me
A nightingale sang in Berkeley Square

The moon that lingered over London Town
Poor puzzled moon, he wore a frown
How could he know we two were so in love?
The whole darned world seemed upside down

The streets of town were paved with stars
It was such a romantic affair
And as we kissed and said goodnight
A nightingale sang in Berkeley Square

And like an echo far away
A nightingale sang in Berkeley Square

Overall Meaning

The Glenn Miller Orchestra's "A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square" is a beautiful, romantic song that speaks of a magical night where two people meet and fall deeply in love. The lyrics paint a picture of a dreamy, almost surreal scene as the two lovers are surrounded by beauty and enchantment. They hear angels dining at the Ritz, and a nightingale singing in Berkeley Square. The moon is watching over London town, and the streets are paved with stars, all while the entire world seems upside down. It is as though everything around them is conspiring to create the perfect atmosphere for their love to blossom.

The lyrics then shift to a more introspective tone, as the singer realizes that he may be mistaken about the magic of that night, but that he is willing to swear that a nightingale really did sing in Berkeley Square when the woman smiled at him. It is as if the memory of that special moment is so powerful that nothing can make him doubt it.

Overall, "A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square" is a song that speaks of love, magic, and the power of a moment to change one's life forever. It reminds us that even in the darkest of times, there is always the possibility of finding something beautiful and meaningful.

Celebrated my 36th wedding yesterday and this is the song I always think of when I look over at my beautiful wife.

Miller and Eberle nailed this one!

Shoot me down, but although I’m British, I much prefer this version over the Vera Lynn version. ❤️

Ah, this was my number 1 favorite song when I first heard it. As it was only one of the few jazz songs I knew a few years ago. This song inspired me to sing. I used to be so trash haha. Good times those were.
