Ev'rything I Love
The Glenn Miller Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When days are long and nights are lonely
And all my daydreams have gone astray
I think about the one and only
Who's bound to find me some golden day

The one I love is coming along some day
And I'll have none except the one I love
He/She may be near or ever so far away
But I'll have none except the one I love

And though our meeting is left to chance
Until our meeting
I still will have my dream romance

And through the night I pray to the moon above
To please be kind and find the one I love

Overall Meaning

The Glenn Miller Orchestra's song "The One I Love" is a poignant ballad that captures the feelings of loneliness and longing for a particular person. The opening lines paint a picture of the singer's state of mind, where days are long and nights are lonely, and daydreams have gone astray. The only thing that gives them hope is the thought of the "one and only" who will come along someday and rescue them from their loneliness. This person, as the lyrics suggest, is the one the singer truly loves and desires.

The refrain of the song repeats the phrase "And I'll have none except the one I love," emphasizing the singer's devotion to this person. Even though they may be near or far away, the singer's heart belongs to them alone. The bridge of the song gives a glimpse of the uncertainty that lies ahead, as the meeting between the singer and the one they love is left to chance. However, the singer chooses to hold onto the hope of a dream romance until that meeting happens. The final lines of the song reveal the singer's vulnerability and desperation as they pray to the moon above to help them find the one they love.

Overall, "The One I Love" is a heartfelt and emotional song that expresses the universal desire to find true love and companionship.

Hey 78 prof, I've learned recently about the Glenn miller orch using a "choir" in few of his records to my knowledge. Which I'm sure it's just the band members humming a simple melody. I was wondering if you knew any more songs like this besides the two that I know such as this one and "baby Mine"

You've right that the "choir" is merely the band humming. A few other records where Miller used that same effect, though not always credited to a choir....

"Dearly Beloved" includes a humming obbligato by the band as Skip Nelson sings the lyric: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qEztxqxQAjQ

"Perfidia" has something similar during the vocal by Dorothy Claire and the Modernaires, more noticeable on the broadcast version (with Paula Kelly) than on the studio recording but present on both: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=znKKoYIEqzk&t=30s

The Irving Berlin World War II anthem, "A Little Old Church in England," finds the band singing actual words (attributed incorrectly on some labels to the band's vocalists, though they may also have joined in): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7q4u4F97xAE
