Perfidia
The Glenn Miller Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

To you my heart cries out, Perfidia,
For I found you, the love of my life, in somebody else's arms
Your eyes are echoing perfidia,
Forgetful of our promise of love, you're sharing another's charms

With a sad lament my dreams have faded like a broken melody
While the gods of love look down and laugh at what romantic fools we mortals be
And now I know my love was not for you
And so I take it back with a sigh, perfidious one, goodbye

Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye, goodbye

Overall Meaning

The Glenn Miller Orchestra's song, Perfidia, is a poignant and sorrowful melody that captures the essence of a heartbroken lover. The lyrics express the pain of betrayal and the loss of true love. The singer cries out in agony for his beloved, who he found in the arms of another. The word "Perfidia" is repeated throughout the song, and its meaning is clear; the object of the singer's affection is perfidious, or deceitful.

The lyrics describe the pain of unrequited love, as the singer's dreams have faded like a broken melody. He laments that the gods of love mock the foolishness of mortals who fall for perfidious partners. The chorus implores the perfidious one to leave and goodbye is repeated several times, driving home the finality of the situation.

Overall, the song is a heartbreaking commentary on the realities of love and the pain of betrayal. It speaks to anyone who has ever been let down by a partner and reminds us that sometimes, despite our best efforts, love cannot conquer all.

Bless you Robert. Yes, the Greatest Generation. My Mom and Dad from that era also. I was born in '47. Grew up hearing this as a child. Music that held a war generation together.

@cf1934

You must be 92 now. In six more days I'll be 85. I hope you're still well. My older brother would be 94 now, but he passed away when he was 55.

@Blarson 12 Perfidia is the Spanish word for perfidy - a rarely used english word which means untrustworthiness - the singer has discovered the love of his life in somebody else's arms ...

I love Big Band Music. It is so beautiful. It has wonderful meaning. I used to play it for my elderly folks when I worked in a nursing home. This music would bring a smile and it would light up their eyes. I even was asked to dance by a WWII vet and boy did we cut a rug. <3 this

@StudebakerHawk57

This was the music of my parent's generation. It seems the older I got, the smarter they got. This music is PURE gold.

I was born in 1974. I have loved Jazz and Swing and Big Band for literally as long as I can remember. I began playing it for my children while they were still in diapers, and now they are high schoolers who are in love with this music. All three are in Jazz band and have these tunes on their iPhones playlists. I was actually surprised how many of their friends know and love this music as well. It makes me smile to know this music will never truly die so long as we continue to share it with the world.

I love what you said. I have hope now that good music won't die. Thank you!
