Serenade In Blue
The Glenn Miller Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When I hear that Serenade in blue
I'm somewhere in another world, alone with you
Sharing all the joys we used to know
Many moons ago

Once again your face comes back to me
Just like the theme of some forgotten melody
In the album of my memory
Serenade in blue

It seems like only yesterday
The small cafe, a crowded floor
And as we danced the night away
I hear you say forever more
And then the song became a sigh
Forever more became goodbye
Cause you remained in my heart, but

Tell me darling in there still a spark?
Or only lonely ashes of the flame we knew

Should I go on whistling in the dark,
Serenade in blue

Overall Meaning

The Glenn Miller Orchestra's song "Serenade in Blue" is a timeless classic that explores the theme of lost love and reminiscence. The song is a testament to the power of music in evoking memories and emotions from the past. The opening lines "When I hear that Serenade in Blue, I'm somewhere in another world, alone with you" set the tone for the song, transporting the listener to a different place and time. The melody is hauntingly beautiful and the lyrics are full of poetic imagery, conveying the magic of a lost love that still lingers in the heart.

The song's narrator recalls a time many moons ago when he shared joy and love with his partner. He remembers her face and how they danced the night away to the titular serenade in a small cafe. The song captures the bittersweet feeling of nostalgia, as the singer wonders if there is still a spark left in their relationship or if it has turned to ashes. The final lines, "Should I go on whistling in the dark, Serenade in Blue," suggests that the singer is uncertain about what the future holds but is willing to hold onto the memory of love through the power of music.

I’m 55 years old and I have been listening to this type of music since I was 13 years old.

Having an interest in World War II history started me off on it.

I grew up in Hawai’i and there was an AM radio station which played 1940’s-1950’s music and on the weekday nights, they’d play an hour’s worth of classic radio shows.

The first half hour was a comedy/variety and the second half hour was drama/action/suspense.

To this day, I listen to this beautiful music and my now, 17 year old son has been listening to this music for the last 8 years.

One of the greatest songs recorded by Glenn Miller, Ray Eberle and the Modernaires.that will last forever and remain so as it was popular in 1942. Thanks for the video.

I remember when I first heard glen miller I was just a kid at the bomber squadron restaurant in west palm beach, FL. They had old radio headphones you could wear and listen to the music of ww2 and old air traffic chatter. That restaurant is long gone now but good memories.

Beautiful composition by the great Harry Warren born Salvatore Guaragna 1893-1981 Great Arrangement by Billy May who was a trumpet player in Miller's band and went on to arrange many great hit tunes for Sinatra. Serenade in blue played here by Glenn Miller orchestra with Ray Eberle and modernaires, a winning combination of all super talented people.
