Vacation
The Go-Go's Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Back here at home there's nothin' to do
Now that I'm away
I wish I'd stayed
Tomorrow's a day of mine that you won't be in
When you looked at me I should've run
But I thought it was just for fun
And I'm not so strong
I should've known all along that time would tell
A week without you
Thought I'd forget
Two weeks without you and I
Still haven't gotten over you yet
Vacation, all I ever wanted
Vacation, had to get away
Vacation, meant to be spent alone
Vacation, all I ever wanted
Vacation, had to get away
Vacation, meant to be spent alone
A week without you
Thought I'd forget
Two weeks without you and I
Still haven't gotten over you yet
Vacation, all I ever wanted
Vacation, had to get away
Vacation, meant to be spent alone
Vacation, all I ever wanted
Vacation, had to get away
Vacation, meant to be spent alone
Vacation, all I ever wanted
Vacation, had to get away
Vacation, meant to be spent alone
The Go-Go's hit song, "Vacation", is a classic example of their signature upbeat pop rock sound. The lyrics depict the singer's longing to escape from the mundanity of her life back home and take a vacation to get away from her thoughts of a past relationship. The opening lines convey her difficulty in moving on as she keeps thinking about her ex-lover. She regrets not staying with him and wishes he were there with her on this day that he won't be with her.
The following lines give away that the singer knew at some level that this fling was bound to end. She thought of it as simply some fun, but now she regrets not seeing the signs of it being something more. She is struggling to let go of that short-lived relationship and even after two weeks without him, she can't seem to forget him. The chorus finds her seeking the perfect escape from her despair in a vacation - a getaway that's meant to be spent solo.

@1stKnight.
As a 55 year old man, I to grew up listening to The Go-Go's. I was in love with all of them!
I saw them in concert at age 48, and I danced on stage with them!
They played the soundtrack to my life.
