And if you are leaving can you leave me my silver jubilee mug?
My old flag?
My dark woods?
My sunrise?
If you're leaving can you please say goodbye?
And if you are leaving can you leave your number?
And get in the cab
And wave you goodbye
I'll drive in the early hours down to the sea
I'll stand on the beach where the storms amplify
All the voices that I care for
And the ghosts I hold sacred
In this alignment that lasts for a day
There's nothing that I can do anyway, anyway
What am I doing here?
Waiting for you?
Eh, hey
So rebuild the railways
Firm up all the roads
No one is leaving
Now this is your home
And the horses, the foxes, the sheep, and the cows
Bow down on their knees
To the fanfare of progress, it's always the same
We cheer on the clowns as they roll into town
But their faces look tired and sad to me
And carry the terrible things they've seen
All lost in a painting of a sky coloured oil
In this Merrie Land
You are my crows, my window rattlers
Perfumed valley criers
Oh the dark ponds of Merrie England
The deep space echoes
Get on your mo
What did you say? Mobility (you can fly)
Get on your mobilised hooters (to the moon)
Hooters
Mobilised Hooters
(One day)
Get hold of those mobilised hooters
They are half price
This is not rhetoric
It comes from my heart
I love this country
Daneland, I am your kin
You were the ones who work together
Put the money in the pockets
To the few and their fortunes
Who crowd the school benches
And jeer at us all 'cause they don't care about us
They're graceless and you shouldn't be with them
'Cause they are all disconnected and raised up in mansions
And two hundred plastic bags in a whale's stomach
So you turn to the trident
Are we green, are we pleasant?
We're not either of those, Father
We're a shaking wreck where nothing grows
Lost in the sky coloured oils of Merrie Land
You can fly to the moon
One day
The opening verse of "Merrie Land" by The Good The Bad & The Queen is about a break-up, where the singer requests the departing lover to say goodbye to him and leave behind some of their memories. The singer urges the lover to leave behind their silver jubilee mug, old flag, dark woods, and sunrise if they are leaving, while also requesting them to share their number so that he can pack his bags and bid them farewell. The singer then imagines himself standing on a beach in the early hours, listening to all the voices and ghosts he cares for, amplified by the storm. However, he realizes that there is nothing he can do about the situation, as he sings, "what am I doing here? Waiting for you?"
In the subsequent verses, the song takes on the wider topical issues affecting the country. Damon Albarn sings about the need for rebuilding the railways and firming up the roads but at the same time, ensure that nobody has to leave because "this is your home." The last verse touches on Brexit, where Albarn sings, "We're not green, we're not pleasant/We're a shaking wreck where nothing grows/Lost in the sky coloured oil of Merrie Land."
Line by Line Meaning
If you're leaving please still say goodbye?
Can you give me the courtesy of saying goodbye if you are leaving?
And if you are leaving can you leave me my silver jubilee mug?
If you have to leave, can you at least leave me with my silver jubilee mug?
My old flag?
Can you also leave me with my old flag?
My dark woods?
Can you also leave my dark woods intact?
My sunrise?
Can you also leave me with the beauty of the sunrise?
And if you are leaving can you leave your number?
If you're going away, can you leave me a way to contact you?
I'll pack my case
I'll prepare to leave
And get in the cab
I'll get in the taxi and leave
And wave you goodbye
I'll say goodbye to you as I leave
I'll drive in the early hours down to the sea
I'll drive to the sea in the early morning hours
I'll stand on the beach where the storms amplify
I'll stand on the beach where the storms are stronger
All the voices that I care for
I will listen to all those voices that are dear to me
And the ghosts I hold sacred
And also the memories that I cherish
In this alignment that lasts for a day
In this brief moment where everything seems to fit together
There's nothing that I can do anyway, anyway
There's nothing I can do about it anyway
What am I doing here?
Why am I here?
Waiting for you?
Am I waiting for you?
So rebuild the railways
Let's rebuild the railways
Firm up all the roads
Let's make the roads stronger
No one is leaving
No one is leaving this place
Now this is your home
This is your home now
And the horses, the foxes, the sheep, and the cows
The animals in the countryside
Bow down on their knees
Are forced to submit
To the fanfare of progress, it's always the same
To the sound of progress and development, which always follows the same pattern
We cheer on the clowns as they roll into town
We celebrate the politicians that come to visit
But their faces look tired and sad to me
But to me, they seem exhausted and unhappy
And carry the terrible things they've seen
And are burdened with the horrors they've witnessed
All lost in a painting of a sky coloured oil
All of these problems are overshadowed by the beauty of the landscape
In this Merrie Land
In this country that is both beautiful and flawed
You are my crows, my window rattlers
You are the sounds I hear every day
Perfumed valley criers
The sweet fragrance of the flowers in the valley
Oh the dark ponds of Merrie England
The murky waters of this country
The deep space echoes
The echoes in the vast expanse of space
Get on your mo
Get on your way
What did you say? Mobility (you can fly)
What did you say? Have the freedom to move (you can fly)
Get on your mobilised hooters (to the moon)
Get on your machines that allow you to travel (to the moon)
Hooters
Machines that make a sound
Mobilised Hooters
Machines that allow you to travel
(One day)
(Someday)
Get hold of those mobilised hooters
Get a hold of those machines that allow you to travel
They are half price
They are on sale
This is not rhetoric
This is not just a fancy speech
It comes from my heart
It comes from my deepest feelings
I love this country
I love my country
Daneland, I am your kin
I feel a connection with Denmark, your neighbor
You were the ones who work together
You are a people who know how to join forces and work together
Put the money in the pockets
Put the money in the hands of the people
To the few and their fortunes
Instead of just a few wealthy people
Who crowd the school benches
Who fill the classrooms
And jeer at us all 'cause they don't care about us
And look down on the rest of us because they don't care
They're graceless and you shouldn't be with them
They lack grace and you shouldn't associate with them
'Cause they are all disconnected and raised up in mansions
Because they are disconnected from reality and live in luxury mansions
And two hundred plastic bags in a whale's stomach
And they contribute to polluting the environment with plastic waste
So you turn to the trident
So you call upon the military power
Are we green, are we pleasant?
Are we really environmentally friendly and welcoming?
We're not either of those, Father
We're neither of those things, Father
We're a shaking wreck where nothing grows
We are a damaged and unstable place where nothing prospers
Lost in the sky coloured oils of Merrie Land
Overshadowed by the beautiful landscapes of this country that are built on an economy powered by oil
You can fly to the moon
You have the capability to accomplish great things
One day
Someday
