The Good Life started out as a means for Tim Kasher to use a songwriting approach that differed from his other projects (namely, Cursive), but it didn’t take long for the solo project to become a band, and for that band to finally come into its own.
The Good Life’s sound has evolved from the refined, quiet pop of the first full-length, Novena on a Nocturn, to the moody hooks of 2002’s Black Out, to the sing-along anthems of divorce and disillusionment found on the recent Lovers Need Lawyers EP. The sum of these parts is found on Album of the Year.
Album of the Year brings all that is the sound of The Good Life to fruition – catchy, moody pop rock that fluctuates between the all-ages club and the smoky cabaret, right alongside sing-along crescendos that spin into cinematic bursts. In short, every song has a plan – every song is going someplace, and lyrically, going there will inevitably involve leaving, being left, or leaving in anticipation of being left. Kasher’s ability to cleverly turn an innocuous phrase into a malicious slur of ill will leaves you not knowing whether to laugh or cry, all the while giving you the distinct impression that you’ll be quoting him at some point down the road. With that said, could Album of the Year just as well be called Break-up Album of the Year? Maybe. But that would limit it to being compared only to other break-up albums, and, well, it can hold its own.
The follow-up to this year’s Lovers Need Lawyers EP features Tim Kasher, Stefanie Drootin, Ryan Fox, and Roger Lewis, as well as a guest vocal performance on "Inmates" from former The Good Life member Jiha Lee.

The Good Life is also a recent Nels Cline live project based on the music of Ornette Colleman. The other band memebers are: Ben Goldberg on clarinet, John Dietrich on electric guitar, Trevor Dunn on electric bass and Scott Amendola on drums.

The Good Life's song "Under a Honeymoon" tells the story of a newfound love and the eagerness to keep the passion alive. The first verse speaks of the singer being someone that the other person has finally caught, someone who can warm her as her previous lovers have failed to do. The chorus speaks of how the couple will navigate through life together and face the challenges as they come, acting and reacting in tandem. The second verse speaks of how the couple decides to take the next step in the relationship, holding nothing back and being comfortable in their denial that dark love can be reconciled. The song concludes by saying how the couple's honeymoon phase feels right, and the singer falls in love too soon, caught beneath its glow.

We both decide to let go of all inhibitions and just give in to our feelings, without reservations.

We'll be our true selves without worrying about showing our true colors to each other.
And so, eventually, we became really good actors.
But unfortunately, as we kept pretending, we became incredibly skilled in play-acting, and it became more and more difficult to distinguish the truth from the fluff.

We keep taking turns pretending and responding as we keep making up reasons for what we're feeling.

And all these pretenses and knee-jerk reactions keep happening in the context of our honeymoon period.

While we both believe this blissful period will go on forever, we know, all too well, that it won't last.
We tell ourselves to act surprised,
We're already preparing ourselves, although subconsciously, to pretend to be surprised when our honeymoon comes to an end.
We're comforted in our denial
We love to feel secure in our continued ignorance and deliberate denial.
That dark love can be reconciled
We are harboring a dangerous hope that we can somehow mend our broken past with each other's help.
Oh please, oh please, reconcile me
You are very desperate to repair, once and for all, your previous shattered or broken relationships.
From all these bad actors,
Spare me this group of bad actors who have deceived you in the past and soured your view of love.
All these bad endings.
Let me be the one that brings to you a happy, harmonious closure to the many painful endings you've gone through.
