🤣🤣 I am singing along!!

Yesterday I spent 3 hours on the phone to my childhood best friend.....we spent the first hour crying, and discussing the war in Ukraine, the 2nd hour crying and talking about our declining health (I've been alone and disabled with chronic illnesses/pain for past 29 yrs, plus she's just had major knee surgery and has now caught Covid), and the last hour talking and laughing about our childhood. It's been years since I've laughed like that!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 What set me off, was us recalling our crazy, and very innocent childhoods, singing silly songs at school, and acting them out.... like The Ying Tong Song! We literally used to do the walking along the corridor and singing the song behind a closed door, then coming back in!!! Lol My face is STILL aching, because I'd was laughing so much!! ...... we were singing it down the phone 😂

Another song we used to do, was The Banana Boat Song.......again, complete with the running down the corridor, and singing it behind the closed door! 🤣🤣 It was the Stan Freberg version.

PS....My only local friend is a lassie that volunteered for me a few years ago. I don't see her much now a days due to her workload/family etc, but she JUST popped over for a quick visit today....I was telling her about me and my friend singing The Ying Tong Song, and due to her being younger than me, she had never heard of it!! She asked me to sing it for her!! She gave me a look of bewilderment/amusement!! 🤣🤣

I'm going to send her this, so she can hear it properly.....may be it's a generational thing! Lol

I just played this to my 3 year old granddaughter. She abosolutely fell about laughing and we have had to repeat it 15 times. 65 years ago I was doing the same. Imagine an American 3 year old enjoying the Goons!

Not even Wikipedia knew who performed that item! Thank you so much - I've been wondering about it for over 60 years! Presumably the BBC Concert Orchestra was brought in to accompany her lovely voice? Are you a singer too? I still play my old single of this song occasionally, and, like most people here, I still crease myself laughing. First heard it when our enlightened music teacher at school put it on during the last lesson before the summer hols. A treasured record.

Back in the 60's there was a kids publication called 'TV Comic' which featured the Telegoons.One story featured the Goons trying to make a fast buck by organising a game of bingo in China involving the 6 billion population.The prize was to be one bowl of rice.It was left to Bluebottle to print the bingo cards but unfortunately he only knew 3 numbers in Chinese......Ying,Tong and Iddle I Po.So these were the only numbers on the bingo cards and Gritpipe Thynne was the bingo caller who also only knew those 3 numbers and so after announcing ,"Ying......Tong.....Iddle I Po", there was a collective shout of, "Blingo !" from 6 billion voices.The last scene in the comic strip was the goons ladling rice into the bowls of a queue of jubilant Chinese that stretched into infinity!

Trouble is "silliness" is a very adult concept. As a child I didn't get The Goons (or Monty Python) because the "silliness" felt absurdly forced. Some seventy years on, it still does.

It's like Marmite, most people who give it a thumbs down are like those in the day that couldn't understand the madness and genius of the Goons. Love it or hate it. I have been involved in an online game for years, all my characters are named after Goon Characters. 🥰🥰🥰🥰 Best bit is the younger generation haven't got a clue.

I grew up with the marvellous Goons - the world is a sad a dark place now without them and their crazy comedy 😪 Dont laugh but when I served in the Falklands - they had ONE radio station FIBS......Falkland Island Broadcasting......... it was mainly VERY old recordings of BBC radio shows it was SUPERB. It was like going back in time to the 60's. Every Thursday night all us servicemen would sit around the radio for the 'GOON SHOW'. It certainly relieved the doom and gloom! We were so lucky to have this brief period to relive our lost youth!

Piece of trivia for you. In the 1950's Harry Secombe was under contract as a recording artist with the Philips label; he could not sing on Goon tracks for other labels, which is why he just speaks his lyrics here.

I was going out with a woman in 1998 who had a 4 year old daughter and I asked her one day to shout out the window to some woman waiting for the bus..."Ying Tong Yiddely Po" ...we were laughing loads cus she kept doing it every time she saw anyone on the road we lived on😹😹

Yes I remember it well I'm 68 I listened to it on radio I was 5 or 6 years old there was Harry seacome spike Milligan Peter sellers and Michael bentine also same year the clithero kid round the horn the navy lark and listen with mother Billy bunter then TV was very popular and all went onto TV then it was watch with mother oh those where the days gas lights in the street at home outside toilet a tin bath in front of a coal fire a dog rack for drying your clothes a scrubbing board black coal tar soap clogs I remember it well snow blizzards horse drawn milk floats cobbled stones hand me downs cotton nappies better then than now it's a shame the world has gone to the dogs I don't care soon I will be dead and good luck to the next generation we had the very best years hard difficult but we survived we had respect which this new generation doesn't have shame goodbye from an old now extinct generation like the dinosaur gone for ever never to return

I'm 59, but things were exactly the same. We lived in rural Norfolk, England, and we were very poor, so yep, I had the tin bath in front of the coal fire, and the creepy outside toilet full of slider's webs etc etc. Your comment brought it all back to me. My brother, who was 12 years older than me had a reel to reel tape recorder, so that's how I got to hear The Goon Show I think. I only remember bits and pieces of their shows, but I definitely remember The Ying Tong Song, as we used to sing it and act it out at school. 😂😂 I grew up loving Spike Milligan too, and went to see his show in Norwich.
