there a precious fountain,
free to all, a healing stream,
flows from Calvary's mountain.
In the cross, in the cross,
be my glory ever;
'til my raptured soul shall find,
Near the cross, a trembling soul,
love and mercy found me;
there the bright and morning star
sheds its beams around me.
Near the cross! O Lamb of God,
bring its scenes before me;
help me walk from day to day,
with its shadows over me.
Near the cross I'll watch and wait,
hoping, trusting ever,
'til I reach the golden strand,
just beyond the river.
The song "Near The Cross" by The Grace Thrillers is a hymn that speaks of the significance of Jesus Christ's death on the cross. The first verse speaks of the desire to remain close to the cross, where a precious fountain, symbolizing the blood of Jesus, flows freely and heals all those who come to the cross, as seen in Isaiah 53:5 which says, "But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed."
The chorus expresses the desire to have the glory of the cross be a constant reminder and source of hope throughout life, even until death. The second verse describes the personal encounter with love and mercy at the cross, represented by the bright morning star, a symbol of hope and guidance. It is through this encounter that the singer recognizes the significance of the cross in their life.
The third verse asks for the help to walk through each day with the shadows of the cross over them, a reminder of the sacrifice that was made. The final verse speaks of watching and waiting with hope and trust until the day when the singer reaches the "golden strand," a symbol of heaven.
Overall, "Near The Cross" is a hymn that emphasizes the importance of the cross in the life of a Christian, and encourages believers to draw near to it as a source of healing, hope, and guidance.
