Mexico
The Grapes Of Wrath Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

And then November comes
And the sun is gone
The rain turns to snow
It gets too cold
It goes on and on

I made my money from work
I got some friends involved
You know we're gonna fly south
We're gonna to be like birds
We're gonna have some fun

So its off to Mexico
Everybody's dying to go
So its off to Mexico
No I don't have to shovel snow

A Scandinavian's depressed
He shines a light screen to his head
It cheers him up a bit
But for the price of it
Could buy a ticket to the sun

So its off to Mexico
Everybody's dying to go
So its off to Mexico
No I don't have to shovel snow

Yeah Yeah Yeah

So its off to Mexico
Everybody's dying to go
So its off to Mexico
No I don't have to shovel snow

I love my northern home
I like Christmas too
But after three dark months

I want to feel the sun
I wanna have some fun

Overall Meaning

The Grapes of Wrath's song Mexico speaks about the desire to escape the cold weather and head southwards to Mexico where the sun shines bright and the snow shoveling is non-existent. The song talks about how November comes and takes the sun away, and goes on to explain how it rains and turns to snow, making it too cold to bear. The artists have made money working and convince their friends to travel along with them to Mexico. The lyrics continue with the idea of wanting to fly like the birds, and subsequently, have some fun, and hence, flying to Mexico is their only option.

The song Mexico is a reflection of the Canadian musician's life and focused on the theme of escapism. The lyrics speak to the human desire to escape from the wintery climate and travel to a place where there is warmth and a break from the monotony of everyday life. The song is also a celebration of Mexico, where people can have fun without any snow and shed their inhibitions as if they were birds, flying freely with the wind.

Overall, the song is all about the struggle of dealing with a harsh winter and the urge to escape from it, which is relatable to people from all walks of life.

Watch the trailer for the making of this album. The instruments and especially vocal tracks on the record sound absolutely brilliant. Incredible processing. The songs on this record are incredibly catchy. Love hearing these guys play together again. I grew up in a small town in BC so as a youth I identified with their music. I've grown more conservative over the years and my life and career reflect that, but I still have a total soft spot and sentimentality for the old and new Grapes music.
