Dark Star
The Grateful Dead - Zabriskie Point Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Reason tatters, the forces tear loose from the axis
Searchlight casting for faults in the clouds of delusion
Shall we go, you and I while we can
Through the transitive nightfall of diamonds?
Mirror shatters in formless reflections of matter
Glass hand dissolving in ice, petal flowers revolving
Shall we go, you and I while we can
Through the transitive nightfall of diamonds?
The Grateful Dead’s Dark Star is a psychedelic rock song that has left fans pondering over its meaning for decades. The opening line, “Dark star crashes, pouring its light into ashes,” describes a moment of destruction and renewal. The dark star symbolizes the end of something significant, while the ashes represent the start of something new. The next line, “Reason tatters, the forces tear loose from the axis,” suggests that something chaotic and uncontrollable is happening, and reason is unable to make sense of it.
The third line, “Searchlight casting for faults in the clouds of delusion,” further emphasizes the idea of confusion and disorientation. The imagery suggests that someone is attempting to penetrate the murky waters of delusion to find some truth. The following verse, “Mirror shatters in formless reflections of matter,” refers to the human psyche and its reflection in reality. The line, “Lady in velvet recedes in the nights of goodbye,” may refer to a spirit or entity that is leaving this world. Finally, the repeated call, “Shall we go, you and I while we can, through the transitive nightfall of diamonds?” suggests that life is short, and we should make the most of it before it’s too late.

The stars have aligned, perfect interaction and timing between Bob's chords and Jerry's lead. Wish Bob's chord changes were turned up a bit more in the mix. One of the best dark stars in my opinion..short, sweet, explosive, yet still complex

Actually this is one of the best things for hearing Bob! He's laying down the whole universe that Jerry and Phil are hurtling through. :) It's been 51 years and my hair still stood on end when I heard this. Live Dead is the most perfect album ever!
