There Is An End
The Greenhornes Lyrics

(featuring: Holly Golightly)

(From Broken Flowers Soundtrack)

Words disappear,
Words weren't so clear,
Only echos passing through the night.

The lines on my face,
Your fingers once traced,
Fading reflection of what was.

Thoughts re-arrange,
Familar now strange,
All my skin is drifting on the wind.

Spring brings the rain,
With winter comes pain,
Every season has an end.

I try to see through the disguise,
But the clouds were there,
Blocking out the sun (the sun).

Thoughts re-arrange,
Familar now strange,
All my skin is drifting on the wind.

Spring brings the rain,
With winter comes pain,
Every season has an end.

There's an end,
There's an end,
There's an end,

There's an end,
There's an end.

Overall Meaning

The song "There Is An End" by The Greenhornes featuring Holly Golightly is a melancholic and introspective piece that dwells on the transience of life and its endless cycles. The opening lines "Words disappear, words weren't so clear, only echos passing through the night" set the tone for a sense of loss and confusion that permeates throughout the song. The singer seems to be grappling with the impermanence of love, memories, and time itself, as symbolized by "the lines on my face, your fingers once traced, fading reflection of what was."

The lyrics then shift to the idea that our perceptions and feelings about life can change over time, as "thoughts re-arrange, familiar now strange, all my skin is drifting on the wind." The use of nature imagery here, such as the arrival of spring and its accompanying rain or the pain that comes with winter, further emphasizes the cyclical nature of life and its bittersweet reality. Ultimately, the song concludes with the repeated phrase "there's an end," a simple yet powerful reminder of the inevitability of our mortal existence.

Overall, "There Is An End" is a poignant meditation on the human experience, one that acknowledges both the beauty and the fragility of life. Its lyrics and melody resonate with a sense of wistfulness and acceptance, inviting us to contemplate our own place in the grand cycle of things.

Jim Jarmusch is such a charismatic director.
If you haven't watched Broken Flowers yet, don't postopone it any longer.

I remember first hearing this song from the Broken Flowers soundtrack (like everyone else) and remember being blown away by it. And now, ~15 or so years later, it's still amazing.

@lamylam4873

Same for me. I always think of this song to put an end to all things negative and appreciate the present of positive things

I also heard it from that film. But first I listened to it on commercial for jeans or clothes I think. At least it was a music channel like MTV. Didn't have internet then or a smartphone. I don't remember how I found it but with my first Sony smartphone (non Android though), I had TrackID, something like Shazam.

2/12/2024 ~ Me too! Just watched "Broken Flowers" (once again!) - and - always loved this song, the first time I heard it when the movie originally came out! It's got a 1960s vibe with a modern twist ... 💐
