The Gun (1968-1969) was a short-lived hard rock group from England that had a top ten hit with "Race With the Devil" in 1968. Formed by brothers Paul and Adrian Curtis (a.k.a Paul Gurvitz and Adrian Gurvitz) alongside Louis Farrell, their first album on Epic was a heavy, psychedelic affair with orchestral touches. Their second album, Gunsight, already showed signs of the sound that made the Gurvitz brothers later famous.
Still, the power trio never managed to quite sustain the mainstream success that they had experienced with "Race With the Devil", particularly since they had to compete against other heavy metal progenitors such as Cream, Deep Purple, and Led Zeppelin at the time. Though earning major respect and spreading their influence to their fellow musicians, the band's days were numbered. After The Gun folded in 1969, the Gurvitz brothers formed Three Man Army and Baker Gurvitz Army. Other projects of note include providing important help to Graeme Edge of The Moody Blues with two solo albums and Adrian Gurvitz recording several personal releases, including the top 10 hit "Classic" in 1982.

"Race With the Devil" & "Yellow Cab Man," from Gun's '68 LP would still knock the socks off a young aspiring guitar rocker today. This is the stuff of legend. They were famous like Cream, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin or even Iron Butterfly. Gun could out-play Grand Funk Railroad for sure. Drums are first rate, lead guitar & added brass are terrific. Obviously well-recorded. Paul & Adrian Curtis (Gurvitz) went on to record as Three Man Army & with Ginger Baker. Check also: Sir Lord Baltimore.

These Lads really had their own brand of punch up rock. A three piece that were in your face. The guitarist Adrian Curtis really knew how to get around his guitar. At that time they found a new direction which was different and caught a lot of people by surprise

I don't know if you guys are still checking in here, but I had to add a few cents. I hadn't heard this stuff since, well, sometime around 1968 when it caught my 13 year old eye at a variety store. I purchased and really enjoyed the album and as a young guitarist thought it was very cool. I lost track of this but could still (at 59) hear several favorite tunes in my head. So what do you do, you do a google search for Gun and Yellow Cab Man right? I ended up here. I enjoyed listening and I'm going to look up the later bands that have been mentioned. Thanks to all of you for the info.
