Dulli and Lanegan have regularly contributed to each other's projects since 2000; of the duo's origins, Dulli said "I think Mark told a journalist we were doing it, and then the journalist called me, and I didn't know we were doing it." On Christmas Day 2003, Dulli and Lanegan began work on the collaboration, titled Saturnalia.
In July 2007, the music website Pitchfork Media announced that the duo, "two of the alt-rock era's greatest frontmen," had signed to Seattle label Sub Pop. Soon thereafter, Sub Pop reported a 4 March, 2008 release date for Saturnalia. Dulli and Lanegan plan to tour in the United States and abroad to promote the album.
On September 2, 2008, The Gutter Twins released their eight-song EP Adorata exclusively through iTunes. The EP was mostly recorded during sessions for their first album, Saturnalia. Adorata features two previously unreleased originals ("Spanish Doors" and "We Have Met Before") alongside covers of "Down the Line" (José González), "Deep Hit of Morning Sun" (Primal Scream), "Duchess" (Scott Walker), "Belles" (Vetiver), "Flow Like a River" (Eleven), and "St. James Infirmary" (traditional). A portion of the proceeds from the release of Adorata will go to the Natasha Shneider Memorial Fund. Shneider, a long-time friend of the band, was the lead singer for Eleven and a member of Queens Of The Stone Age.

The Gutter Twins Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You'll find a stone in your heart
For time let's stand together
We?ll fall or we?ll rise
You and I in secret style
Awaiting all for thee
You bet your life
Come down slow and easy
You'll find a way, you'll find a way
Deny the world will follow you
I know you'll rise, I know you'll rise
So keep it down
And it won't go away
Your secret style
It won't go away
And it?s right inside of me
And it?s right inside of me
Come ?round, let's stand together
We?ll rise alone forever
Team of life, a secret style
They're waiting up for me
Come down slow and easy
You'll find a way, we?ll find a way
Deny the world will follow you
I know we?ll rise, I know you'll rise
I know you'll come alive
I know you'll come alive
I know, I know, I know, I know
I know, I know, I know
The opening lyrics of the song "Each To Each" by The Gutter Twins set a somber tone, promising a deeply introspective journey. The imagery of being cold outside in the darkness speaks to the loneliness and isolation that one may feel in the world. The stone in your heart refers to feeling weighed down by the burdens of life, or perhaps carrying pain from past experiences. The lines "For time let's stand together, We'll fall or we'll rise" convey a sense of determination to face life's challenges head-on, no matter the outcome.
The chorus of the song speaks to the idea of having a secret style or inner strength that allows one to face the world with confidence. The lyrics "Deny the world will follow you, I know you'll rise" suggest that by denying the negative influences of the world, one can cultivate their own unique sense of self and find success. The repetition of "I know" at the end of the chorus seems to be a personal reaffirmation that even in the face of adversity, the singer is certain of their own resilience.
In the second verse, the "team of life" refers to the people in one's life who support and uplift them. The promise to "rise alone forever" suggests a self-reliant attitude, but the call to "let's stand together" implies that the journey will be easier with supportive companions. The repeated line "I know you'll come alive" reinforces the message that despite hardships, it is possible to find hope and strength.
Overall, "Each To Each" by The Gutter Twins is a song about facing adversity and overcoming it with inner strength and the support of loved ones. Through its powerful lyrical imagery, the song speaks to the universal experience of pain and loss, but ultimately offers a message of hope and perseverance.
