All three of the band's albums were released on Johnson's influential Olympia record label, K Records.
Following a hiatus through the early 2000's, The Halo Benders reformed in March 2007 for a pair of shows at the Visual Arts Collective in Boise, ID. The band featured Doug Martsch, Ralf Youtz, Calvin Johnson, and Brett Netson.
The Halo Benders' music is characterised by untraditional sounds, movements, and song structures. Additionally, the vocals of the baritone Johnson and the pitchy Martsch overlap often, even though often entirely unrelated. Johnson has said that the two write lyrics for songs largely independently.

Lose myself in you
These lyrics from The Halo Benders's song Surfers Haze express a desire to become completely immersed and lost in a romantic partner. The repetition of "lose myself in you" reinforces this idea, as if the singer wants to completely give themselves over to their partner and be enveloped by them. The line "Turn your lap into a throne" can be interpreted as the singer wanting to submit to their partner and be subservient to them, while also finding comfort in their love.
The next stanza brings a bit of a darker tone with the mention of tentacles, which could be a metaphor for the power and control the partner has over the singer. The idea of wrapping tentacles around the head could represent the partner's influence and hold over the singer's thoughts and emotions. The repetition of "repeat our names until they rhyme" could signify a desire for further connection and unity between the two individuals, as if saying their names together until they become one.
Overall, the lyrics depict a strong desire for physical and emotional connection with a partner, while also hinting at the potential power dynamic between them.
