Formed by Bob Miranda, David Libert, Tom Giuliano, and Ralph DiVito, after they all graduated high school in Paterson, New Jersey, their major hits were "See You in September" (1966) (originally recorded by the Tempos in 1959) and a cover version of the George Gershwin/Ira Gershwin song, "I Got Rhythm" (1967), updated for the group's sunshine pop musical style. Following the September 11, 2001 attacks, "See You In September" the song was listed in a memo containing 150 songs that radio conglomerate Clear Channel Communications recommended to be pulled from the airwaves - despite the fact that the song is about two lovers saying goodbye for the summer and had nothing whatsoever to do with terrorism.
The group had nine US Billboard Hot 100 Singles hits from 1966 to 1968. The band continues to perform with lead singer Bob Miranda as the only remaining original member.
Why Do Fools Fall In Love
The Happenings Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Why do birds sing so gay
And lovers await the break of day
Why do they fall in love
Why does the rain fall from up above
Why do fools fall in love
Love is a losing game
Love can be a shame
I know of a fool you see
That fool is me
Why do fools fall in love?
Why do birds sing so gay
And lovers await the break of day
Why do they fall in love
Why does the rain fall from up above
Why do fools fall in love
Why do they fall in love
Why does my heart skip this crazy beat
Because it knows
It will reach defeat
Tell me why, tell me why
Why do fools fall in love?
The Happenings’ song “Why Do Fools Fall In Love?” is a love song that poses the question, why do people fall in love even when they know it can mean both joy and heartbreak. The opening lines talk about the happiness and eagerness of lovers as they await the dawn, and it is followed by the refrain, which repeats the title question. The lyrics also mention the inevitability of the pain that comes with love, and how it feels like a losing game, leading to the admission that the persona is a fool in love, just like everyone else.
The song is known for its catchy beat and simple structure, which made it popular during its release in 1964. However, underneath the simple lyrics and music is a poignant reflection of the human condition, where the vulnerability and risk of love are both celebrated and questioned. The idea that love is a losing game, and yet people keep playing it anyway is a theme that many can relate to.
