The music ranged from re-inventing the club sounds of 30's Berlin along with strong songs of human struggle. Live performance was a strength as humour and visual elements were an important part of each concert. Their profile grew in the early eighties as a result of their support for the miners' strike as the band was able to perform equally well outdoors as well as in amplified venues. The band also developed music workshops, an acoustic street set and worked on themed projects and collaborations. All performed works were arranged by individual members of the band and as the band developed, many more original compositions were featured.
Sarah Jane Morris, the band's first singer, left in the 1980s and gained chart success with the Communards as well as having a solo career. She was replaced briefly by Denise Black. From 1988, the band's last permanent and long-term singer was Bernadette Keeffe. The band's last live performance was in the year 2000 to celebrate London's first elected mayor at Coin Street Festival on South Bank, London.

The Japanese song “Kaze Wo Atsumete” by Happy End tells the story of the singer and their journey through the city. The lyrics start off by describing how they took a walk through a deserted alleyway while exhaling deeply. As they looked through a hole that was stained with dirt, they saw an express train that seemed to be crossing the sea. This particular view of the city made the singer feel like they too, wanted to spread their wings and fly into the sky.
The second verse talks about how the singer felt as they crossed the street during a beautiful morning. As they walked by a large ferris wheel, they saw a tall skyscraper that looked like it was wearing a gray hat on top. The singer was struck by how the tower was standing in contrast to the beautiful blue sky. The lyrics are descriptive and paint a picture of the beauty within the singer’s surroundings. Ultimately, the song is about the joy of living in the moment and experiencing life’s little pleasures.

As I was walking down a towering alley
In the outskirts of the city
I saw beyond the blotched fog
A streetcar still sluggish from sleep
Crossing over the sea (Chorus)
That's why I want to
gather the wind (under my wings)
Gather the wind (under my wings)
Gather the wind (under my wings)
And run across the blue sky
Across the blue sky
As I passed through
a beautiful sunrise
I saw beyond the empty-looking breakwater
A city with its day-colored sails up
Moored in the port
That's why I want to
gather the wind (under my wings)
Gather the wind (under my wings)
Gather the wind (under my wings)
And run across the blue sky
Across the blue sky
When I was killing time one morning
At an empty coffee shop
I saw through the cracked glass
The rustling of the high-rises' silken clothes
Brushing on the sidewalk

I don't imagine Isobe listening to this type of music
