Fall
The Harlequin Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Not just any other day
The slate was polished clean
Playing nice but gonna roll those dice
At every opportunity
Do you believe

She thought she had the courage but she bottled it again
When you don't believe in meant to be but you believe in where you've been
Tempting fate but it's too late

You need a flame in the dark, a match and a spark
The light that guides you home
Some proof that you're not alone
When you know it's a sin but you do it again
And you hope that no one knows
But the devil made the deal and you crossed your fingers it was real in hope that no one knows
And so it goes

He lost everything when he bet it all
On a hunch in OKC
2 ex-wives, that casino life
A slave to his routine
Can you believe

He was lookin' for a hero but he just needed a friend
A change of heart and a brand new start
One more chance to try again
He needed a win. We all need a win

You need a flame in the dark, a match and a spark
The light that guides you home
Some proof that you're not alone
When you know it's a sin but you do it again
And you hope that no one knows
But the devil made the deal and you crossed your fingers it was real in hope that no one knows
And so it goes

We all fall down
At the end of our rope

The deal goes down
And the credits roll

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Fall" by The Harlequin's portrays the story of two individuals who are seeking a way out from their troubles. The song starts with the lines "Not just any other day, the slate was polished clean," signaling a new beginning for the characters. One of the characters is a woman who is trying to overcome self-doubt by taking risks and rolling the dice every chance she gets. The other character is a man who has lost everything he had because of gambling and is looking for a way to win big and start anew. The song highlights their struggles as they try to find a way to turn their lives around.

The lines, "She thought she had the courage but she bottled it again when you don't believe in meant to be but you believe in where you've been," show how the female character is trying to gather the will to take risks but finds it challenging. The phrase "meant to be" implies the concept of fate, which she doesn't believe in. However, she finds comfort in the memories of her past experiences. The lyrics, "Tempting fate but it's too late," highlight the fleeting nature of the opportunities that present themselves in life.

The male character in the song has lost everything he had because of his gambling addiction. Despite his losses, he still hopes to win big and start anew. The line, "He was looking for a hero but he just needed a friend," shows how the character is seeking a way out of his loneliness and struggles. The lyrics, "A change of heart and a brand new start, one more chance to try again, he needed a win, we all need a win," depict the character's desire to start a new life and hope for a second chance. The song implies that no matter what our struggles may be, we all need some sort of support system and a bit of hope to carry on.

The Magician represents earning power and meeting potential.

The Inverted Magician represents unearned power and squandered potential.

On that note, never trust a Tarot reader that doesn't shuffle the deck in a way that allows the cards to be inverted.

@vuthara8725

@@chiffmonkey While I'm not a reader myself, I do know the interpretations of the cards he was given:

The Fool (Either unnumbered or zero) represents a new beginning, often a leap of faith; The Fool travels to a new land, bringing with him only the clothes on his back. When reversed, it indicates it is something one should be hesitant about jumping into, as recklessness on this journey may end it early, it may also represent a lack of the faith needed to be successful in this new endeavor. Either way, the beginning of something is inevitable.

Death (thirteen) Is the card that is often feared out of superstition (explaining his reaction), however, a reader will/should never try and predict deaths. Often this card refers to death in the sense of transformation; death of an old idea gives life to a new one, it can be difficult, unexpected, terrific or terrible. The main takeaway is that to attempt to avoid this change will only make the current issues at hand worse, which is what it's reversed form represents. It can mean that one is having trouble letting go of the past, death can haunt us all, but holding on to grief only prolongs the pain.

The Magician (one) represents willpower, representing someone who has gained the skills and abilities needed to be successful in their endeavors. Often this means that one must use their will, focus, and intellect to achieve your goals as they present themselves. When reversed, it means a lack of that clarity, that someone can use your skill and ability for their own selfish desires, it is a caution to tread lightly around those who are cunning and deceiving, perhaps even that cunning person you need to watch out for is yourself.

Do take that all with a grain of salt, as it is only my basic understanding of the cards, but I hope it's accurate enough to explain how the symbology of their music lines up with these three particular cards. I know I found it fascinating.

@tt_here

This masterpiece is so impeccably ambiguous and at the same time explicit about a variety of situations/internal as well as interpersonal dynamics.

It always blows my mind and engages my emotions when at different stages of life I listen to it and derive something completely new meaning and interpretation. This is what poetry is meant to be like!

Poets of The Fall are the epitome of the fulfilling art, the pinnacle of it, in so many ways!

Please continue creating more masterpieces. For we need your creativity, inspiration, wisdom, and gentle (and sometimes sudden shredding) touch of our hearts.

This is a requiem, for the harlequin
The great pretender, crashing' down with style
Here's to the fall of man, fame to dust
To fortune, to sand
The great surrender finally arrived

[Chorus]
This is how the requiem loves the harlequin
Wake up, your chains are porcelain
Like a phoenix from the ashes we will rise again
This is what the requiem loves to hear you sing
To the beat of your fool hеart hammering
One more timе, we'll cry into the night again, woah

[Post-Chorus]
(Woah, woah!)
(Woah, yeah!)
(Woah, woah!)

[Verse 2]
This is a requiem for the comedian
The one who used to deftly dodge in time
You cut a sparkling gem, never heeding the warning
Of the silver glint of knives in hungry eyes
This is how the requiem loves the harlequin
Wake up, your chains are porcelain
Like a phoenix from the ashes we will rise again
This is what the requiem loves to hear you sing
To the beat of your fool heart hammering
One more time, we'll cry into the night again, woah

[Post-Chorus]
(Woah, woah!)
(Woah, yeah!)
(Woah, woah!)

[Bridge]
So how does it feel now?
Tell me can you let it go?
The wrong you can't undo
So how does it feel now?
Tell me can, you let it go?
The wrong you can't undo

[Chorus]
This how the requiem loves the harlequin
Breaking up this heart of porcelain
From the ashes we will rise again
This is what the requiem loves to hear you sing
To the beat of your fool heart hammering
One more time, we'll cry into the night again
This is how the requiem loves a harlequin
Wake up, your chains are porcelain
Like a phoenix from the ashes we will rise again
This is what the requiem loves to hear you sing
To the beat of your fool heart hammering
One more time, we'll cry into the night again

Poets of the fall never disappoint. Always loved their choosy dark themes. Cinematography and his crispy voice suits perfect to this song, band deserve all the praise and love. IDk there is always special place for Carnival of rust though..... much love and stay blessed

Why has Marko not made to Hollywood movies/series yet. Imagine him both acting and giving soundtrack of the movie/series as well 😍❤️

@SirEgorVassa

He really should appear in the next Remedy games.

@pk2237

Agreed, he is a natural actor. Admittedly, I admire how well he is able to express and convey thoughts, feelings and sensations! He could have (or still could) become a great actor for real!

@EmmaBailts

Hopefully he never decides he wants to have a go at Hollywood. Not because he wouldn't be a great actor but because that world is beyond toxic and I wouldn't wish that on him.
