All We Ever Knew
The Head and the Heart Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning | Line by Line Meaning
I see nothing
For miles and miles and miles
When I sleep in the evening, oh lord
There she goes, only in dreams
She's only in dreams
Well, well my love
We've been here before
Don't drag me through this again
We tried everything under the sun
Now I'm trying to wake up from this
I'm trying to make up for it
All we ever do, is all we ever knew
La la la la la la
You don't see why you would there's no love to give
Well what goes around comes around
I know sometimes you get so caught in a dream
But now it's time to wake up from this
It's time to make up for it
It's time to wake up from this
Yes it's time to wake up from this
It's time to make up for it
All we ever do (all we ever do) is all we ever knew
La la la la la la
I'm feeling low, feeling high
Feeling down, why isn't this enough?
I'm feeling low, feeling high
Feeling down, why isn't this enough?
All we ever do is all we ever knew
All we ever do
It's time to wake up from this
La la la la la la
The Head and the Heart's song "All We Ever Knew" is a powerful, emotional track that deals with themes of hope, regret, and reflection. The first verse sets the tone for the song, as the narrator wakes up to see nothing but emptiness stretching out before them. The second verse introduces the idea of a woman who appears only in dreams, suggesting that the narrator is grappling with feelings of loneliness and a sense that something important is missing from their life. The chorus encapsulates the central idea of the song, as the narrator implores themselves and their loved ones to break out of old patterns and embrace the present moment.
As the song progresses, it becomes clear that the narrator is wrestling with regret over past choices and missed opportunities. They acknowledge that they have "been here before" and are desperate not to repeat their past mistakes. At the same time, they express a deep sense of frustration and confusion, as they wonder why their current situation isn't enough and whether they will ever find true love and happiness. Ultimately, though, the song ends on a powerful note of hope, as the narrator resolves to "wake up from this" and begin anew.
One of the most interesting aspects of "All We Ever Knew" is its use of contrasting emotions and musical styles. The verses are slow and contemplative, with sparse instrumentation and a melancholy atmosphere. By contrast, the chorus explodes with energy and optimism, featuring upbeat drums, catchy melodies, and soaring harmonies. This creates a sense of tension between the narrator's inner turmoil and their determination to overcome it.

When I wake up in the morning
At the beginning of each day,
I see nothing
I don't have anything to look forward to,
For miles and miles and miles
It's like my life stretches out for miles with no end in sight,
When I sleep in the evening, oh lord
At the end of each day,
There she goes, only in dreams
The one I love, I can only see in my dreams,
She's only in dreams
I know that she's not really here with me,
Well, well my love
Although I love her,
We've been here before
We've been through tough times like this,
Don't drag me through this again
I really don't want to go through it one more time,
We tried everything under the sun
We've tried every possible solution,
Now I'm trying to wake up from this
I'm trying to get out of this cycle of unhappiness,
I'm trying to make up for it
I'm trying to fix what's broken between us,
All we ever do, is all we ever knew
We keep doing the same things we always have,
La la la la la la
And it's getting us nowhere.
You don't see why you would there's no love to give
You don't understand why I would bother, since there seems to be no love between us,
Well what goes around comes around
But I believe that you reap what you sow,
I know sometimes you get so caught in a dream
I know that sometimes you get so caught up in your own world,
But now it's time to wake up from this
But it's time to snap out of it and face reality,
It's time to make up for it
It's time to make amends for the mistakes we've made,
Yes it's time to wake up from this
We can't keep going through the motions like this anymore,
All we ever do (all we ever do) is all we ever knew
We need to break the cycle of our old habits,
I'm feeling low, feeling high
I'm feeling a mix of emotions,
Feeling down, why isn't this enough?
Despite everything, why do we still feel so unfulfilled?
It's time to wake up from this
We can't keep pretending everything is okay,
La la la la la la
There's more to life than just going through the motions.

The band consists of Josiah Johnson (vocals, guitar), Jonathan Russell (vocals, guitar), Charity Rose Thielen (violin, vocals), Chris Zasche (bass), Kenny Hensley (keyboards) and Tyler Williams (drums).
Composed primarily of transplants to the Seattle area, The Head and the Heart write and play songs that speak to the newness of a fresh start, of the ghosts left behind, of moving forward, all brimming with a soulfulness and hope for a better life than the one we've all been sold.
Stylistically, think a folksy Beatles or The Avett Brothers with a little extra oomph. Catchy piano melodies stand side by side with a tight trio of harmonies, and solid minimalist drums, groovin' bass, and plenty of hand percussion and foot stomps make the live show inspiring and really goddamn fun.
After the band self-released its eponymous debut album in June 2010, the emblematic Seattle label Sub Pop re-released the album. For the Sub Pop version, the song “Sounds like Hallelujah” has been re-recorded, live favorite “Rivers and Roads” has been added, and the album has been re-mastered.
The band's second album "Let's Be Still" was released on October 15, 2013.
The band released their third studio album, "Signs of Light", in September 2016.
The band's fourth album, "Living Mirage", was released in May 2019.
Band member Josiah Johnson released his debut solo album, "Every Feeling On a Loop", in September 2020.
