Composed primarily of transplants to the Seattle area, The Head and the Heart write and play songs that speak to the newness of a fresh start, of the ghosts left behind, of moving forward, all brimming with a soulfulness and hope for a better life than the one we've all been sold.
Stylistically, think a folksy Beatles or The Avett Brothers with a little extra oomph. Catchy piano melodies stand side by side with a tight trio of harmonies, and solid minimalist drums, groovin' bass, and plenty of hand percussion and foot stomps make the live show inspiring and really goddamn fun.
After the band self-released its eponymous debut album in June 2010, the emblematic Seattle label Sub Pop re-released the album. For the Sub Pop version, the song “Sounds like Hallelujah” has been re-recorded, live favorite “Rivers and Roads” has been added, and the album has been re-mastered.
The band's second album "Let's Be Still" was released on October 15, 2013.
The band released their third studio album, "Signs of Light", in September 2016.
The band's fourth album, "Living Mirage", was released in May 2019.
Band member Josiah Johnson released his debut solo album, "Every Feeling On a Loop", in September 2020.
Coeur D
The Head and the Heart Lyrics

Wind naked down the corridor
The thoughts leaving my head
They twist through yours
What will become of these gestures that we made
I've given up my bible
You moved out of state oh oh oh
Wearily waiting on the wasting of his days
A sad, sodden, smoldering soul
Give you three bucks for your sympathy
And another for a cigarette
The interaction feels so cold
Oh the songs
People will sing for hope
And for the ones that have been gone for too long
Oh the things
People will do for the ones that they love
We're only here to find the love that lingers after the moment
So kiss me in the back room where the music plays
I know that it's not over
No
Oh the songs
People will sing for hope
And for the ones that have been gone for too long
Oh the things
People will do for the ones that they love
Break down the corridors (la da da, da da da)
Break down the corridors (la da da, da da da)
Messes that I haven't tried to clean up in awhile
You're in my soul now
You've got to waste away with me
My minds made up I'm staying here with you
There's no use knowing which way the wind is blowing
My minds made up I'm doing, I'm doing this with you
There's no use knowing which way the wind is blowing
My minds made up, I'm doing this, I'm doing this
You're in my soul now
You've got to waste away with me
The Head and the Heart's song Coeur D is a contemplative and wistful track that delves into the themes of love, loss, and hope. The opening lyrics paint a picture of a space where thoughts and emotions are shared between two people, and it becomes unclear whose thoughts are whose as they begin to blur. The singer seems to be questioning the worth of the gestures they made in the past and how they will shape their future. The mention of the bible and the move-out hints at a sense of loss and confusion on the singer's part.
The chorus presents a stark contrast as it talks about the power of hope and love, and how people will go to great lengths to keep them alive. The following instrumental break, where the melody takes center stage, brings a sense of hope and a belief that things can still turn out well. The lyrics in the second half of the song again become contemplative and introspective, highlighting the connection between two people who complement each other. The line "There's no use knowing which way the wind is blowing" suggests that even though the future is uncertain, the singer has decided to stay with their partner and face any challenges that come their way together.

Wind-blown whispers wind naked down the corridor
Thoughts leavin' my head, they twist through yours
