Composed primarily of transplants to the Seattle area, The Head and the Heart write and play songs that speak to the newness of a fresh start, of the ghosts left behind, of moving forward, all brimming with a soulfulness and hope for a better life than the one we've all been sold.
Stylistically, think a folksy Beatles or The Avett Brothers with a little extra oomph. Catchy piano melodies stand side by side with a tight trio of harmonies, and solid minimalist drums, groovin' bass, and plenty of hand percussion and foot stomps make the live show inspiring and really goddamn fun.
After the band self-released its eponymous debut album in June 2010, the emblematic Seattle label Sub Pop re-released the album. For the Sub Pop version, the song “Sounds like Hallelujah” has been re-recorded, live favorite “Rivers and Roads” has been added, and the album has been re-mastered.
The band's second album "Let's Be Still" was released on October 15, 2013.
The band released their third studio album, "Signs of Light", in September 2016.
The band's fourth album, "Living Mirage", was released in May 2019.
Band member Josiah Johnson released his debut solo album, "Every Feeling On a Loop", in September 2020.
Coeur D'Alene
The Head and the Heart Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Wind naked down the corridor
The thoughts leaving my head
They twist through yours
What will become of these gestures that we made
I've given up my bible
You moved out of state oh oh oh
Wearily waiting on the wasting of his days
A sad, sodden, smoldering soul
Give you three bucks for your sympathy
And another for a cigarette
The interaction feels so cold
Oh the songs
People will sing for hope
And for the ones that have been gone for too long
Oh the things
People will do for the ones that they love
We're only here to find the love that lingers after the moment
So kiss me in the back room where the music plays
I know that it's not over
No
Oh the songs
People will sing for hope
And for the ones that have been gone for too long
Oh the things
People will do for the ones that they love
Break down the corridors (la da da, da da da)
Break down the corridors (la da da, da da da)
Messes that I haven't tried to clean up in awhile
You're in my soul now
You've got to waste away with me
My minds made up I'm staying here with you
There's no use knowing which way the wind is blowing
My minds made up I'm doing, I'm doing this with you
There's no use knowing which way the wind is blowing
My minds made up, I'm doing this, I'm doing this
You're in my soul now
You've got to waste away with me
The first verse of The Head and the Heart's song Coeur D'Alene paints a vivid picture of two people intertwined in each other's thoughts. The lyrics suggest that these thoughts are twisting and turning through each other's minds, leaving one to wonder what will come of the connection they share. The next two lines reveal that one person has left and the other has given up on something that was once important to them. It feels as though one is more invested in the relationship than the other, as shown through the line "The interaction feels so cold."
The second verse of the song reflects on the power of music and what it can do for people. The lyrics suggest that music can bring hope to those who are hurting and help people remember those who have passed on. In the chorus, the repetition of the line "Oh the songs people will sing for hope" highlights the idea that music can connect people and bring them comfort.
The final verse of the song speaks to the deep love between the two people referenced throughout the song. The lyrics suggest that they are choosing to be together, even if it means not knowing what the future holds. The line "You're in my soul now, you've got to waste away with me" is particularly poignant, as it speaks to the idea that love is about sharing life's joys and struggles with another person.
Overall, Coeur D'Alene is a song about the power of love and the role that music can play in bringing people together. It speaks to the idea that even when things are uncertain or difficult, we can find strength and comfort in the connections we share with others.
