Composed primarily of transplants to the Seattle area, The Head and the Heart write and play songs that speak to the newness of a fresh start, of the ghosts left behind, of moving forward, all brimming with a soulfulness and hope for a better life than the one we've all been sold.
Stylistically, think a folksy Beatles or The Avett Brothers with a little extra oomph. Catchy piano melodies stand side by side with a tight trio of harmonies, and solid minimalist drums, groovin' bass, and plenty of hand percussion and foot stomps make the live show inspiring and really goddamn fun.
After the band self-released its eponymous debut album in June 2010, the emblematic Seattle label Sub Pop re-released the album. For the Sub Pop version, the song “Sounds like Hallelujah” has been re-recorded, live favorite “Rivers and Roads” has been added, and the album has been re-mastered.
The band's second album "Let's Be Still" was released on October 15, 2013.
The band released their third studio album, "Signs of Light", in September 2016.
The band's fourth album, "Living Mirage", was released in May 2019.
Band member Josiah Johnson released his debut solo album, "Every Feeling On a Loop", in September 2020.

Whisperin' through the dusty aisles
Watchin' all the thinkers read
Tryin' to keep a grown mans quiet's like
Pulling teeth on a winter's eve
Cracks and pulls and unfamiliar roads
I'm on this one to find out
Veggie gas and brothers harass
Can't stay healthy in a cloud of eyes
Listenin' to my every move
Just tryin' to survive
This self-imposed adventure
That selfishness drives I can barely keep my head above the blue
Tryin' to keep it off me and you
But I can see the sunshine's rays gleaming through the clear water
Telling me you gotta hop in for this chapter's ride
There will always be better days
There will always be better days
Makin' music is what we do
Tryin' to weave the patterns for me and you
Tryin' to make the grasses breathe and a grown man cry
Truth and life is where I gleam
Tangled up in a funnel's wind
Tryin' to come out walkin'
Understand it's beyond me talkin'
Tryin' to come out walkin'
Understand it's beyond me talkin'
I can see the sunshine's rays gleaming through the clear waters
Telling me you gotta hop in for this chapter's ride
There will always be better days
There will always be better days
Bein' alone isn't lonely
It's sought after like a holiday
Bein' home is my vacation
Postcard dreams of a full-sized bed
Quit the band one too many times serious enough to get a rise
But he'll hop in the next mornin' for another drive
That's a promise the best advice we ever received is for you and me to stay together
It's easy to begin and hard to end
I'm just glad to go through it all with you as friends
I can see the sunshine's rays gleaming through the clear waters
Telling me you gotta hop in for this chapter's ride
There will always be better days
There will always be better days
There will always be better days
The Head and the Heart's Library Magic is a song that depicts the singer's love for libraries and the adventure of finding oneself through books. The lyrics show the allure of libraries, with its magical whispers that draw the singer through the dusty aisles as he watches thinkers read. The singer encounters some challenges while on this adventure, including attempts to keep grown men quiet and fighting to stay healthy amid a cloud of critical eyes. Despite this, the song is a reminder that there will always be better days and the sunshine's rays can be seen gleaming through the clear waters, inviting us to take a chance on this chapter's ride.
The second verse delves deeper into the artistic process of the band as the singer describes making music and weaving patterns for their listeners. The struggle to make the words come alive is described as being tangled up in a funnel's wind, with the singer trying to come out walking and attempting to understand that it is beyond him. The bridge of the song talks about the beauty of being alone and home while also acknowledging the importance of staying together. The song ends on a positive note with the reminder that better days will always come, and it's good to go through it all with friends.
