Rivers and Roads
The Head and the Heart Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

A year from now we'll all be gone
All our friends will move away
And they're going to better places
But our friends will be gone away

Nothing is as it has been
And I miss your face like Hell
And I guess it's just as well
But I miss your face like Hell

Been talking 'bout the way things change
And my family lives in a different state
And if you don't know what to make of this
Then we will not relate
So if you don't know what to make of this
Then we will not relate

Rivers and roads
Rivers and roads
Rivers 'til I reach you

Rivers and roads
Oh rivers and roads
Oh rivers 'til I reach you

Rivers and roads
Rivers and roads
Rivers 'til I reach you

Rivers and roads
Rivers and roads
Rivers 'til I reach you

Rivers and roads
Rivers and roads
Rivers 'til I reach you

Rivers and roads
Rivers and roads
Rivers 'til I reach you

Rivers and roads
Rivers and roads
Rivers 'til I reach you

Rivers and roads
Rivers and roads
Rivers 'til I reach you

Rivers and roads

Rivers and roads
Rivers 'til I reach you

Overall Meaning

The Head and the Heart's song Rivers and Roads is a reflective piece about the inevitability of change and the pain of separation. The first two lines lay down the central theme, with the recognition that everyone's lives are in motion, and that we are all separated eventually. The lines "And they're going to better places/But our friends will be gone away" bring to light the fact that we can't always go where our friends go; sometimes we lose people to the winds of fate.

The singer then reminisces about a person they miss "like hell," acknowledging that life is in constant flux, even though sometimes it hurts. In the third verse, the singer highlights the bittersweet nature of change, recognizing the difficulty in reconciling that people and situations always shift around us. Lines like, "And if you don't know what to make of this/Then we will not relate/So if you don't know what to make of this/Then we will not relate" suggest the sense of disconnection that can sometimes come with change.

The refrain, "Rivers and roads," conjures the image of constant movement and change, while also implying that there is some destination that the singer is trying to reach; that something leads them onward, even if it's uncertain what that something might be. The repetition of the phrase drives home the sense of constant motion, and perhaps the hope that what has been lost might someday be regained.

"Morgan had this idea that if I kissed you, all your memories would come back..."
"You mean like one magical kiss?"

"Yeah I know it sounds crazy"

So many songs about breaking up with one's romantic partners, but not many about growing apart from old friends and family. This song really sums up that feeling.

@jencira1837

This one is dual purpose for me. Because ive had friends move outta state, AND had a relationship end because he had to move lol

True man. It's always these songs about breaking up with partners and stuff but people nowadays always neglects the feelings of growing up and how our life is changing day by day. How we're loosing family, relatives and friends every year or getting apart from them. This song really sums it all up

The first time I heard this song I was drunk and started to cry (no one saw thank Christ). It reminded me of the last time me and my friends were all together. ItĀ made me realizeĀ how I'm not going have my friends in my life the wayĀ they wereĀ in school. People begin they're own lives, graduate college, get different jobs, move away, get married, have kids. It's just how things are, and I really amĀ happy for them, but it still makes me sad as hell. If only we could have all stayed in our little world.
