Composed primarily of transplants to the Seattle area, The Head and the Heart write and play songs that speak to the newness of a fresh start, of the ghosts left behind, of moving forward, all brimming with a soulfulness and hope for a better life than the one we've all been sold.
Stylistically, think a folksy Beatles or The Avett Brothers with a little extra oomph. Catchy piano melodies stand side by side with a tight trio of harmonies, and solid minimalist drums, groovin' bass, and plenty of hand percussion and foot stomps make the live show inspiring and really goddamn fun.
After the band self-released its eponymous debut album in June 2010, the emblematic Seattle label Sub Pop re-released the album. For the Sub Pop version, the song “Sounds like Hallelujah” has been re-recorded, live favorite “Rivers and Roads” has been added, and the album has been re-mastered.
The band's second album "Let's Be Still" was released on October 15, 2013.
The band released their third studio album, "Signs of Light", in September 2016.
The band's fourth album, "Living Mirage", was released in May 2019.
Band member Josiah Johnson released his debut solo album, "Every Feeling On a Loop", in September 2020.
Sun Is Rising
The Head and the Heart Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Get high in your heart and have some fun
Hey, cravin' like the way you look
You're open like a child's first book
Oh, when you speak it's just like a symphony
Oh, your fingers touch me with poetry
Don't underestimate what you mean to me
You're like a constant glimpse of the rising sun
You're like a constant glimpse of the rising sun
Come on baby, jump inside my truck
Don't worry, you know you got good luck
All you do is put your right foot out
That move'll show you what's all about
In the first part of the lyrics, the singer is inviting someone to join them on a journey. The mention of going down the road before the sun suggests the idea of embarking on a new start or adventure. The imagery of getting "high in your heart" and having fun conveys a sense of excitement and joy. The reference to being open like a child's first book implies a sense of innocence and transparency in the relationship or interaction between the singer and the other person.
The following lines focus on the impact of the other person on the singer. The comparison of their speaking to a symphony and their touch to poetry evokes a deep emotional connection and appreciation for their presence. The lyric "Don't underestimate what you mean to me" emphasizes the importance and value the person holds in the singer's life. The repeated phrase "You're like a constant glimpse of the rising sun" reinforces the idea that the person brings light and warmth into the singer's life, symbolizing hope and positivity.
As the lyrics progress, the focus shifts to a sense of carefree spontaneity and adventure. The invitation to "jump inside my truck" suggests a desire for shared experiences and closeness. The reassurance that the person has good luck suggests a sense of optimism and faith in the future. The instruction to "put your right foot out" can be seen as an encouragement to take a leap of faith and embrace new opportunities and challenges, reinforcing the themes of exploration and new beginnings presented earlier in the song.
Overall, the lyrics of "Sun Is Rising" by The Head and the Heart capture a sense of optimism, connection, and adventure. The imagery of the sun rising symbolizes hope and renewal, while the references to music, poetry, and spontaneity convey deep emotional connections and a desire for shared experiences. The song celebrates the joy of companionship, the beauty of human connection, and the excitement of embarking on new journeys with a special someone.

It's getting harder these days
To keep my cool
But don't get me wrong
I was never great
I remember days when money didn't matter
I was building forts and swamps in the summers
And you were serving tea to the Queen
And everything was beautiful
Yeah, we'd run around like animals
And I, I, I, I heard you say
It's getting harder these days
It's getting harder these days
We ran away into the night
Chasing trains like crazies out of our minds
With no more to lose than our Sunday shoes
We packed our bags and said goodbye
We were not afraid
We were not afraid
I remember days when money didn't matter
I was building forts and swamps in the summers
And you were serving tea to the Queen
And everything was beautiful
Yeah, we'd run around like animals
And I, I, I, I heard you say
It's getting harder these days
It's getting harder these days
We ran away into the night
Chasing trains like crazies out of our minds
Oh, and no more to lose than our Sunday shoes
We packed our bags, we said goodbye
We said, look outside, the sun is rising
Look outside, the sun is rising
Look outside, the sun is rising
Look outside, the sun is rising
I remember days when money didn't matter
I was building forts and swamps in the summers
And you were serving tea to the Queen
