These Dreams
The Heart Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Spare a little candle
Save some light for me
Figures up ahead
Moving in the trees
White skin in linen
Perfume on my wrist
And the full moon that hangs over
These dreams in the mist

Darkness on the edge
Shadows where I stand
I search for the time
On a watch with no hands
I want to see you clearly
Come closer than this
But all I remember
Are the dreams in the mist

These dreams go on when I close my eyes
Every second of the night I live another life
These dreams that sleep when it's cold outside
Every moment I'm awake the further I'm away

Is it cloak 'n' dagger
Could it be spring or fall
I walk without a cut
Through a stained glass wall
Weaker in my eyesight
The candle in my grip
And words that have no form
Are falling from my lips

These dreams go on when I close my eyes
Every second of the night I live another life
These dreams that sleep when it's cold outside
Every moment I'm awake the further I'm away

There's something out there
I can't resist
I need to hide away from the pain
There's something out there
I can't resist

The sweetest song is silence
That I've ever heard
Funny how your feet
In dreams never touch the earth
In a wood full of princes
Freedom is a kiss
But the prince hides his face
From dreams in the mist

These dreams go on when I close my eyes
Every second of the night I live another life
These dreams that sleep when it's cold outside
Every moment I'm awake the further I'm away

These dreams go on when I close my eyes
Every second of the night I live another life

These dreams that sleep when it's cold outside
Every moment I'm awake the further I'm away

Overall Meaning

The Heart's song These Dreams is a dreamy track that highlights the singer's desire to escape the harsh realities of her waking life by retreating to the world of her dreams. The opening verse, with its dark and mysterious imagery, sets the tone for the song. The "candle" that is "spared" for the singer suggests hope and a flicker of light in the pitch-black darkness that surrounds her. The "figures up ahead" and "white skin in linen" suggest the presence of other beings - possibly lovers, friends, or even ghosts - who inhabit the magical realm of her dreams. The "perfume on my wrist" suggests a sensual, evocative experience, while the "full moon" that hangs over everything creates an atmosphere of enchantment and possibility.

The chorus of the song reinforces the theme of escape and the singer's yearning for a different reality. The dream world that she inhabits when she closes her eyes is vivid and intense, full of life, passion, and adventure. The line "Every moment I'm awake the further I'm away" underscores the distance that the singer feels from her everyday life, as she yearns for a more fulfilling, meaningful existence.

The final verse of the song introduces the idea of freedom and its relationship to dreams. The "wood full of princes" is a metaphor for the dream world - a place where anything is possible and where the singer can be whomever she wants to be. The freedom that she experiences in her dreams is the "kiss" that she longs for, but the "prince" who hides his face is a reminder that even in dreams, there are limitations and constraints. The song ends on a wistful, dreamy note, leaving the listener with the sense that the singer's quest for fulfillment and escape will continue long after the music fades away.

I'm 70 years old. These are the songs I listened to then & I still listen to today. The difference is that now I am touched so deeply by many of them that I cry because they are so beautiful & really have a lot of meaning which escaped me back then.

Two amazing things related to this song: 1) Nancy was sick when she sang the initial vocal and they kept it because it sounded raw in a soulful way. 2) A 22 y/o super fan was allowed in the studio when the song was recorded as it was her dying wish that Heart honored. That young girl passed shortly after and she was noted on the album credits. Amazing song and amazing band.

22? i bet your old as dirt now.
