Crazy for you
The Heartbeats Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Tell him what you know thought you had me
But I let it go
And now I'm gonna take down the whole thing
Everything is going down with me
Thought you told him everything
Left out a little bit about yourself
And I found out from your best friend
I think its time that I filled him in
And now I'm gonna take down the whole thing
Everything is going down
With me

You know to much keep it to yourself
So much at stake but you don't give a damn
And now it's coming back on you
You keep on pushing baby can't you see
Always try but your never gonna get to me
I'll make sure this time

Tell him what you know I thought you had me
But you let me go
Can't take it anymore cause
I got so much I've been saving up

Everyone's gonna drown in it

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of The Heartbeats’s song ‘Crazy For You’ seems to be about a breakup and a betrayal. The singer seems to be addressing their ex-partner, who had tried to expose them, and is now feeling the repercussions of their actions. The ex-partner thought they had control over the singer but were surprised to see that they had let them go. Now, the singer is taking down everything with them, indicating that they are letting go of everything that was once important to them.

The lyrics further suggest that the ex-partner had told everyone about the singer, but left out certain things about themselves. The singer then found out about certain things from the ex-partner's best friend and is now planning to let everything out in the open. The singer is taking down the whole thing, and everything is going down with them.

In the following lines, the singer tells the ex-partner that they know too much and need to keep it to themselves. The singer adds that they have been saving up so much, and now everyone is going to drown in it. They finally add that they will ensure that the ex-partner does not push them anymore, and they will make sure of it this time.

As a kid growing up in Jersey I would do my homework in my bedroom and listen to Alan Freed and wait for this song to come on. I had to keep the volume down because my parents didn't want me to listen to "that music". To me the Heartbeats, Flamingos, Harptones the Dubs Et al will always be the best. I hit 72 in January but the memories are still very vivid to me.

@hillcresthiker

Thats hysterical, I'm the same age, grew up in Brooklyn and had to listen to Alan Freed under the covers because my dad called it "jungle music" and forbid me to listen.

@billysmith3018

lol - Bronx checking in. That must have been a crowded under the covers with so many of us there listening to Alan Freed. I was 75 two days ago. Heartbeats/Shep were a great group.

Cavecricket1 i grew up in Jersey City. As a teen, the group sound was practically my life. The groups you mentioned were some of my favorites too. I also listened to the dj’s on the New York stations. I sang bass with a Union City group for three years. It’s amusing how most of us seemed to have the same experiences with our parents. My brother and I called it the “sound”. My dad called it the “noise”. Btw I turned 72 early this month.

HIS NAME WAS ELVIS PRESLEY! !! SO THEY MADE ELVIS THE KING OF R . N R SO "WHITE SOCIETY" WAS FORE FULL. BUT THE "TRUTH" IS VERY MUCH, THE TRUTH. ELVIS IS NOT THE "KING" OF R N R . BLACK REPEATING "BLACK SOCIETY" IS THE KING AND QUEEN'S OF R. N..R. WITH THEIR GOSPEL AND R N .B MUSIC. AND THAT'S THE HISTORY OF ROCK AND ROLL. AMEN TO THAT!! I used to listen (after my bedtime) to Alan Freed with my little transistor radio under my pillow. I can still remember "Could This Be Magic?" By the Dubs and "See Saw" by the Moonglows playing. Of course there were many more but these are vivid ones. I'm 74 but still have a teen Doo-wop streak in my heart.
