Broken Afternoon
The Helio Sequence Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

sometimes you feel like a shame or like a ruse
a half cooked idea or a trick to be used
then sometimes you feel so lowly haunted and stark
waving in the wind like a flag that's torn apart
but we all walk blindy when we stagger and we strut
and we're all dealt the hands with the cards of our luck
and we all bow down silent and the words are awe struck
by the shameless light of the broken afternoon

i went walking in the night all alone
darkness seeping slowly in my flesh and in my bone
and the solitary biting at the thoughts inside my head
and the words came slowly and the unborn dream said
that we all lose the path to the black and the blue
but we are come back slackly to the tried and the true
we'll all come together, though it's never too soon
we'll all see the light, of the broken afternoon

in the scientific evening jesus left too soon
trading his last dollar for a dirty motel room
cause he gave all of his riches before he knew what he had
money isn't evil and people aren't bad
now we all just descend out to the mud and the dirt
and we all go insane from the pain and the hurt
and all of us are swayed by the hungry pale moon
and we'll all wake up clear from the broken afternoon

i used to be young but i'm not old now
the shimmering passing of you scotty pal?
the path to now or never is paved with ambition plain
as a sail in the wind or an empty garden space
and we all till and toil in the slowly rising dawn
and we're all fit to fail til the future's finally won

yeah we're all faintly waiting for the young bride to bloom
in the shuttering light of the broken afternoon

Overall Meaning

The Helio Sequence's Broken Afternoon is a sonically emotive song that speaks about the highs and lows of life. The lyrics show that everyone feels like a shame or a ruse sometimes, and that everyone has felt haunted and stark or low at some point. However, the song shows that we are all dealt with different hands, and sometimes we feel like we are walking blindly through life, but there is always hope. The song talks about the struggles of walking through the darkness of life and how it seeps into our flesh, but even in that, there is hope for a better tomorrow.

The song's second verse is about the journey of finding oneself and the winding paths we all have to take to arrive there. The poetry of the song comes to light when the words, "we all lose the path to the black and the blue, but we are come back slackly to the tried and the true" suggest that even though we all become lost at times, there is always a way back to the true path. The last verse of the song takes on a religious overtone, highlighting the emotional fervor behind religion and how it tethers us in the mundane mud and dirt of life. The song leaves the listener with the hope and promise that we will all wake up in the clear light of the broken afternoon.

Love this whole album, 17 years old and I first heard it when I was 12. My dad had died the previous summer and I was lost. My family and I moved to Santa Rosa Beach FL with my grandparents. In those 2 years I was opened to so much amazing music as opposed to the upbeat rap music I was used to listening to. Granted, I was a city kid with all the ambition in the world to become a rapper and had no interest in guitar. My Grandfather played for me and changed my whole perspective on what music was really. I picked up that guitar and played my first melody in the first 15 seconds of touching it and since then nothing has been the same. I now hate my grandfather 4 years later and wish never to see him again, but I will always appreciate the musical influence he showed me. (P.S. my name is also "Alek")

31/01/2020: I was standing at the corner of Shaw and College, shaking and in tears at the part where it said "we all come back to the tried and the true'. I crossed the street into the Monocle shop to flick the switch on another day of buying and selling. That was last January. These days I call my broken afternoons by a different name, and I no longer shake—Anagnorisis—and if in the meantime I look mean, sour and unyielding, it's only because I'm willing to do whatever it takes for the sake of optimism in the long run. (I might never see her again),
