The Captive Mind
The Helio Sequence Lyrics

But you woke me up and the dreamer came to say,
"Please don't forget, just lay and wait"
Pain the pain when you played the part
And you took it all up and you turned your back away
"Try to forget, and we'll okay."
Read the words that I kept in mind
But we spun slightly, they catch those likely
To come back again, come back again
The same the same that you've always been
When you took it all up what it took to do you in
And all under and run away
Blame the blame on a broken heart
When you pack it all up and you make the start again
But call me up on my birthday
Read the words that I kept in mind
And you tried to leave the past behind
But we spun slightly, they catch those likely
To come back again, come back again
Gone in a boat
You're drifting so
The walls you built
The push and pull
Come back in
Come back in
Well you love the love what you could've stayed
You say you'd give it all up for the man that lay away
The plastic beach and passing plates
Shame the shame when you fell apart
But you hold me up and the dreamer came to say,
"Please don't forget, just lay and wait"
Read the words that I kept in mind
And you tried to leave the past behind
But we spun slightly, they catch those likely
To come back again, please come back again
The Helio Sequence's song The Captive Mind seems to tell a story about someone who fell apart and played a part that caused pain to themselves and others. The lyrics suggest that this person tried to leave the past behind and start over, but their actions and behavior kept bringing them back to the same place. The chorus keeps repeating a plea for someone to come back again. The lyrics may be interpreted as a call to action for a person to take responsibility for their actions, learn from their mistakes, and make amends.
The song seems to capture the feeling of being caught in a cycle of behavior, trying to break free but feeling trapped. The repetition of "read the words that I kept in mind" indicates that the singer is holding onto something, perhaps trying to remember a lesson or a mantra to live by. The verses suggest that despite the shame and pain, there is still hope for redemption and change. The dreamer who says "Please don't forget, just lay and wait" may be a metaphor for the subconscious mind, urging the singer to be patient and trust the process of healing.
