Vacation
The Hellflowers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm leaving tomorrow, you can't stop me now
Looking out the door, fast way out
Do what I want, go where I want to go
No one can tell me, yes or no
Hey! I want a vacation
I want a vacation, from you
Hey! I could use a vacation
I could use a vacation
This time it's true
So done with your bullshit
Why'd it take so long?
Was dumb to think I was weak you were strong
Hour or five doesn't have to be far
As long as you're not there
It will be the perfect spot
Hey! I want a vacation
I want a vacation, from you
Hey! I could use a vacation
I could use a vacation
This time it's true
Here I am by myself, enjoying my life
Don't have to listen to you, bitch all the time
Why'd I wait to do this for myself?
Extended vacation, no longer in hell
Hey! I want a vacation
I want a vacation, from you
Hey! I could use a vacation
I could use a vacation
This time it's true
Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey!
Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey!
Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey!
Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey!

Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey!
Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey!

Overall Meaning

The Hellflowers’ song β€œVacation” is about the need for escape, both of the literal and figurative varieties. The singer has had enough of a toxic relationship and is leaving on a vacation to live life on their own terms. The chorus is an explicit cry for freedom, as the singer wants to spend time away from a particular individual who has been suffocating their personal growth.

The opening line of β€œI’m leaving tomorrow, you can’t stop me now” sets the tone for the rest of the song. It’s a declaration of independence, a pronouncement that the singer is finally taking control of their life. The second line builds on that sentiment, suggesting that the singer has been looking for a way out and has finally found it. In the third and fourth lines, we get a sense of the singer’s frustration with how much control this other person has over their life. They want to break free and do their own thing without anyone’s interference.

The second verse identifies the other person in this situation as a source of β€œbullshit.” The singer has finally wised up and no longer believes that they are weak while the other person is strong. They realize that all it takes is time alone to be happy, and they don’t need to go far to get it. By the end of the song, the singer is reveling in their newfound freedom, and the upbeat chorus is an exuberant expression of joy and relief.
