Make It Happen
The High Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

One moment I forget
Who I was before we met
Seems a difficult thing for me
My selective memory

All of my friends tell me
Whatever will be will be
One moment I become
Wrapped up in reflection

Whenever I want it mine
I see it disappear every time
All of my friends tell me
Whatever will be will be

[Chorus]
I'll make it up to you someday
I'll take it back from you anyway
There's always something missing from this
It's something I can't resist
I'll make it up to you someday

One moment I return
To that place where I had learned
That whatever I say or do
Falls short when I'm around you

All of my friends tell me
Whatever will be will be

[Chorus]

So take my picture
Take my picture away
'Cause that day
Is not so far
Not so far away
It's not so far away

[Chorus]

Overall Meaning

The High's song Make It Happen is a song about a person who seems to have lost their identity after meeting someone special. The opening lines "One moment I forget / Who I was before we met / Seems a difficult thing for me / My selective memory" indicate that this person is struggling to remember who they were before meeting the other person. While the singer is grappling with their new identity, the people around them, perhaps their friends, tell them that "Whatever will be will be". They attempt to hold onto their sense of self and reflect, but they always end up wrapped up in their partner.

The chorus "I'll make it up to you someday / I'll take it back from you anyway / There's always something missing from this / It's something I can't resist" indicates that the singer feels like something is missing in their life and that they are willing to do whatever it takes to make things right. They want to take back their life and make amends to their partner, but they are not sure how to go about it.

The second verse "One moment I return / To that place where I had learned / That whatever I say or do / Falls short when I'm around you" reinforces the idea that the singer's partner has a significant influence on them. They are constantly reminded that they fall short in their partner's presence. The song's outro "So take my picture / Take my picture away / 'Cause that day / Is not so far / Not so far away / It's not so far away" brings the song to a close and suggests that the singer is determined to make things right and get back to their true self.

Great song. Saw them support Inspiral Carpets at the SECC in Glasgow in about 1990. This was the highlight, IIRC they played it much faster live.
