1) The Highwaymen was an American country music supergroup, composed of four of the genre's biggest artists, known for their pioneering influence on the outlaw country subgenre: Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, and Kris Kristofferson. Active between 1985 and 1995, the group recorded three major label albums as The Highwaymen: two on Columbia Records and one for Liberty Records. Their Columbia works produced three chart singles, including the number one "Highwayman" in 1985.
Between 1996 and 1999, Nelson, Kristofferson, Cash, and Jennings also provided the voice and dramatization for the Louis L'Amour Collection, a four-CD box set of seven Louis L'Amour stories published by the HighBridge Company, although the four were not credited as "The Highwaymen" in this work.
Besides the four formal members of the group, only one other vocal recording artist appeared on a Highwaymen recording: Johnny Rodriguez, who provided Spanish vocal on "Deportee", a Woody Guthrie composition, from "Highwayman".
The four original members starred in a movie together: the 1986 film Stagecoach.
2) The Highwaymen were a collegiate folk group from the 1960s who had a significant impact on the folk scene of that time and remain famous for the song "Michael" and "Cotton Fields." Formed in 1958 while the band members were at college, the group broke up in 1964 after releasing eight albums and ten singles. They reunited in 1987, minus Chan Daniels (who died in 1975), for a concert for their 25th college reunion. Between then and 2009, the band has performed ten to twelve concerts a year. Today, two of the original five members (Steve Butts and Steve Trott) are still alive, with Dave Fisher dying on May 7, 2010, Gil Robbins (father of actor Tim Robbins) dying on April 5, 2011, and Bob Burnett dying on December 8, 2011.
Help Me Make It Through the Night
The Highwaymen Lyrics

Shake it loose and let it fall
Layin' soft upon my skin
Like the shadows on the wall
Come and lay down by my side
Till the early mornin' light
All I'm takin' is your time
I don't care who's right or wrong
I don't try to understand
Let the devil take tomorrow
'Cause tonight I need a friend
Yesterday is dead and gone
And tomorrow's out of sight
And it's sad to be alone
Help me make it through the night
I don't care who's right or wrong
I don't try to understand
Let the devil take tomorrow
For tonight I need a friend
Yesterday is dead and gone
And tomorrow's out of sight
And it's sad to be alone
Help me make it through the night
I don't want to be alone
Help me make it through the night
The Highwaymen's song "Help Me Make it Through the Night" is a ballad about the pain of loneliness and the human need for companionship. The lyrics portray a person who is in need of a physical and emotional connection with someone else to help them forget the worries of yesterday and the uncertainty of tomorrow. The song opens with the request to the lover to take off the ribbon from their hair and lay down by the singer until the early morning light. The singer asks for nothing but time and an empathetic ear from the lover. The ribbon's metaphorical meaning could be the releasing of the lover's sense of social decorum, and the shadows on the walls could be as if the lovers' shadows have intertwined.
As the song progresses, the singer says that they do not care about what is right or wrong or try to understand it. They only need someone to be with them and help them face the night. The singer wants to forget about yesterday, forget about all that has gone wrong, and it is sad to be alone. The singer begs the lover to help them make it through the night without being alone. The song's second last line is a heartfelt plea, "I don't want to be alone", which gives a poignant impression of the singer's pain and their desire for human companionship.
This song serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of human connections and the pain of loneliness. The songwriters capture the essence of the human experience as they express the need for empathy and companionship. The Highwaymen's rendition of the song is a beautiful version that deserves its place in the annals of country music.
