I Hope This Whole Thing Didn't Frighten You
The Hold Steady Lyrics

Heard they finally got some discipline
Running up the score and stocking up like it's World War IV
I heard that some are getting sprung and some are back in
You know it's always back and forth
And most of them are dead
And some don't even live here anymore
I didn't think we would see them
I guess I should've explained
There was a side of this city I didn't want you to see
There's just these guys that I know, we go back pretty deep
And I hope this whole thing didn't frighten you
There were times that it terrified me
I know what they said, I don't know if it's true
I hope this whole thing didn't frighten you
They're building a bunker down by the river
And someone said that that's where they've been getting together
They got masks for the gas, they're sleeping in their bulletproof vests
I guess Shepard came out of St. Cloud with a little ideology
Some new way of thinking, man
A view to the future
Jesus, this might be a mess
For me, it was mostly the music
I couldn't go to the shows with
I guess I should've explained
There was a side of this city I didn't want you to see
There's just these guys that I know, we go back pretty deep
I saw you look at his shoes, I saw you look at their teeth
I could tell this whole thing kind of frightened you
So you tapped me on the arm like you wanted to cruise
I could tell this whole thing kind of frightened you
They never care if it's true
As long as they got something to prove
And they always got something to prove
And the room full of dudes
And they cranked up the tunes
And I could tell this whole thing kind of frightened you
There was a side of this city I didn't want you to see
There's just these guys that I know, we go back pretty deep
I saw you look at his shoes, I saw you look at their teeth
I could tell this whole thing kind of frightened you
So you tapped me on the arm like you wanted to cruise
I could tell this whole thing kind of frightened you
The song "I Hope This Whole Thing Didn't Frighten You" by The Hold Steady is a story of a man showing his significant other the less savory side of the city where he grew up. He brings her back for Christmas with the intention of introducing her to his old friends, but he fails to adequately prepare her for what she is about to experience. The Cityscape Skins are a group of people whom he used to hang out with, and they are known for being rowdy and unpredictable. The man is nervous about his girlfriend's reaction to the group, and he hopes that she won't be frightened by their behavior.
The lyrics go on to describe how the group has changed since the man last saw them. They have become more organized and disciplined, and they are even stockpiling supplies for what they believe will be World War IV. Some of the members have been released from jail, and others have left town altogether. The man realizes that he should have warned his girlfriend about what she was getting into before he brought her there.
The song explores themes of loyalty, nostalgia, and fear of the unknown. The man is torn between his loyalty to his old friends and his desire to protect his girlfriend from their reckless behavior. He is also nostalgic for the good times he spent with them, but he is aware that their current situation might be dangerous. Finally, he is afraid of how his girlfriend will react to the group, and he hopes that she won't be frightened by their behavior.

This band makes me want to drop my pants and listen with one hand. Consistent goodness over the years. Do yourself a favor and check out Lifter Puller if you haven't, Craig Finn's pre HS band. To get the idea check out The Mezzanine Gypoff off the first LP record and be rocked.
