Frightened Lady
The Hollies Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Just like a top the world goes spinning round
Nobody knows what`s going on I`ve found
Even from Jerusalem to old Japan
Nobody seems to have a definite, definite plan

Must be a peaceful way for us to go
Even the simplest of man must know
The situation`s getting worse and worse
One day the bubble`s gonna burst

But don`t be frightened lady
We will never let them take your boy to war
No don`t be frightened lady
We will never ever go to war no more

Why don`t they finish it all
We are only people and we`re terribly small
Why don`t they finish it all
Do they think that people don`t mean nothing, nothing at all

[Chorus:]

Students are marching now in every land
They won`t be shifted just like grains of sand

If we don`t get together pretty soon
We`ll do the same thing on the moon

Overall Meaning

In Frightened Lady, The Hollies speak about the state of the world, where nobody has a definite plan, and the situation is getting worse, and the bubble is going to burst. The song speaks about war and the feeling of helplessness that people have when governments decide to go to war. The lyrics tell us that there must be a peaceful solution to war, and even the simplest of men must know that. The chorus tells a frightened lady not to worry as they will never let them take her boy to war, and they will never go to war again. The song ends with the students marching now in every land, and if we don't get together soon, we'll do the same thing on the moon.

The song was written and recorded in 1972 by The Hollies, and it was partly inspired by the Vietnam War. The band members were against the war, and the song is a call for peace. Graham Nash of Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young co-wrote the song with Allan Clarke and Tony Hicks. The Hollies recorded the song in their home studio in England, and it was produced by Ron Richards.
