The Hollies Lyrics

Heartbeat
Why do you miss when my baby kisses me?
Heartbeat
Why does your love kiss stay in my memory?

Pittery-pat
I know that new love thrills me
I know that true love will be

Heartbeat
Why do you miss when my baby kisses me?
Heartbeat
Why do you skip when my baby's lips meet mine?
Heartbeat
Why do you flip then give me a skip each time?

Pittery-pat
Sing to me love's story
Bring to me love's glory

Heartbeat
Why do you miss when my baby kisses me?

Pittery-pat
Sing to me love's story
Bring to me love's glory

Heartbeat
Why do you miss when my baby kisses me? (heartbeat)
Why do you miss when my baby kisses me? (heartbeat)
Why do you miss when my baby kisses me? (heartbeat)
Why do you miss when my baby kisses me? (heartbeat)
Why do you miss when my baby kisses me? (heartbeat)

Why do you miss when my baby kisses me? (heartbeat)

Overall Meaning

"Heartbeat" is a classic song by The Hollies, released in 1965. The lyrics are about the feeling of a strong heartbeat when in love. The singer is questioning why his heartbeat skips and flips every time he kisses his baby. He wonders why this feeling stays in his memory and why it affects him so deeply. The song is full of joyful energy and the lyrics capture the excitement of falling in love.

The song is composed with a catchy melody that includes handclaps and features a steady beat. The use of the phrase "pittery-pat" adds a playful element to the song. The lyrics, combined with the music, create a feeling of youthful exuberance and innocent romance. The Hollies' harmony vocals add depth to the song, giving it a sense of unity and warmth.

Interestingly, "Heartbeat" was not a commercial success when it was first released, reaching only #42 on the US charts. However, it became a cult classic and was later covered by several other artists, including Buddy Holly and Dion DiMucci.

LYRICS: Heartbeat, why do you miss
When my baby kisses me?

Heartbeat, why does your love kiss
Stay in my memory?

Piddly-Pat.
I know that new love thrills me.
I know that true love will be.

Heartbeat, why do you miss
When my baby kisses me?

Heartbeat, why do you skip
When my baby's lips meet mine?

Heartbeat, why do you flip
Then give me a skip each time?

Piddly-Pat.
Sing to me love's story
Bring to me love's glory.

The first version of this song that I ever heard was on a Herman's Hermits album I got in 1965 when I was in 7th grade. About 8 years later, I got interested in Buddy Holly and bought a few of his albums. I discovered his version of this song on one of them. There was also a song called "Listen to Me" on one of the Holly albums, and before I played it, I wondered if it would turn out to be the same song with this title that the Hollies had had a hit with a few years earlier. but it turned out to be a different song. It's too bad that the Hollies didn't also record the Buddy Holly "Listen to Me". I have a whole playlist of different songs with the same title by the same artist, so this situation is not unheard of. For example, Glen Campbell did both the Roy Orbison "It's Over" and the Jimmie Rodgers "It's Over".

A kiss from Tony Hicks could bring on an electrical storm, prepare to get zapped. .A real heart stopper that would be. Sorry, just can't take my eyes off him. Obsessed.

Is that Billy Joel playing keyboard? It certainly looks like him
